Commander?

<div class="IPBDescription">How do you recover from bad/no commander</div> I join all games using the Random Team portal. Lately, however, I've been dreading that it will put me on the Marine side. In many cases, when I've played a Marine, the game started out with no one wanting to be commander. So for 30 seconds, we sit around waiting for a commander until either I or another person joins the game wanting to command.

Is there a way around this? I'm not a good commander and it's not for lack of tactics, but for a lack of interface requirements. I just can't get the hang of the interface. In so many of the above situations, the Marines will lose very quickly.

In the case of a bad commander, it's usually someone sabotaging the game and by the time he is ejected, the damage is done. While I love the concept of NS, these two items kill the fun of the game for me when I play on the Marine side.

I'm a huge fan of playing as a team, but there's so many people who just want to give grief to other players. This is compounded by seeing teams who do so well as Marines because they have either a good commander or good teamwork. I resist the urge to switch teams, but I don't know how much longer I can do that. I'd just like to enjoy playing the Marines for a change.

I'm ok with it if people just tell me that I'm screwed and to either join a new server or find better team mates, but is there something I can do to keep the above situations from happening?

Unfortunately, a commander not only has to be reasonable but actually skilled. There are few competent commanders around, and it's a very demanding task (so good commander don't necessarily like to command all the time).

There isn't any way of recovering from having a bad commander, or from having an inexperienced commander steer you into a crappy situation then give up and hop out. Basically, you should just restart. Don't draw out the game any longer than you have to.

Having said that, if nobody wants to volunteer, hop in. Make it clear that you don't really know what you're doing, and hop in. The interface is much friendlier in 2.0. We need as many commanders as possible.

The worst thing that can happen when you are commanding as an inexperienced one? The team loses. But you saw that comming anyway, didn't you?

Try to comm. Pay attention to what a good commander do, and what a bad commander do. Try new things. Experiment. Be daring -- go outside the base.

One game, experiment with the powers of shotguns. Another one? Try electrify. See what happens when you cut of a choke with a turretfarm. Grab a hive and see the outcome. You -will- learn a lot from it.

one of the best things that helps me when i command is to have two or three people following your orders. i dont need the whole team to win, i need three people to work together and the rest just act as cannon fodder. If i have ever commanded you, you will find that i may completely ignore you until the final push for the hive when i drop ha+hmg for all. the three people who do what i tell them will be my focus for 90% of the game - capping res nodes, securing locations. If the three people are good, chances are the team will win. if the whole team sucks, we dont stand a chance

Most people, try to learn commanding. Get a hang of then commander interface and know from your experiences of marine victories. Now your moderately experienced. With this, when you face a no comm situation, go for it and try your luck. Since no one went comm, who can blame you for the loss? If your comm just simply sucks (3 minute lag before he responds to requests/intel/whatever) you should just f4 or better yet, /quit and go to another server.
