<div class="IPBDescription">hellspawn...</div> I ran this by coil, and he said I could make a new topic for it..so here goes.

I noticed everyone is having steam issues, and everyone hates valve, steam and their babies for releasing it, but the entire online Half-Life and Half-Life modifications community is downloading and updating. There's no system on the face of the earth that can handle that. I realize that it's not just the overload, but know that every new program has issues when released, and you can either deal with it or sit there and be grumpy, cussing out steam and Gabe for it.

So I tried some random stuff, and I *sorta* figured out how to get steam working. Not for servers, I'm still trying to get my servers working with steam, but I probably won't do that 'til WON goes down, but as far as client goes, this should work.

First off, got the 500kbs installer? Hahaha..throw it out. Now please. This installer will force you to install steam, but do some other things as well. It'll update the HL client to the latest version, which is neat, and it'll install the all new CS 1.6. Cool, eh? Yeah. Very. It'll now download 450 mb of data, over that network that..let's just say the entire cs, tfc, dod and ns community are trying to use. It'll download at 1 kb/s, and nobody wants that. On top of that, it'll probably not work. It did work for some people, and I'm glad it did, but if you want a bigger chance..move on.

Get the 388 mb installer.Hippy downloads here: <a href='http://www.steampowered.com/getsteamnow.htm' target='_blank'>http://www.steampowered.com/getsteamnow.htm</a>
That's all nice and stuff, but it'll take you a long while to download. If you want to make it short, look for the file name on google, like steaminstall_cs.exe, or check some ftp's.

Before installing the new one, uninstall the old one. Then go to the dir it installed to, probably C:\Program Files\Steam. and delete that entire dir, to get rid of the config files.
Now go to start -> run and type in regedit, then hit enter. This will open your registry, if you don't know what this is, don't touch it, but if you do, you're searching for two steam keys that are under the valve menu in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Now install. Run the installer, follow the instructions, if you already got as far as getting an account on the older version, use it if you want. Doesn't make a difference.
It'll either ask what games you want to convert now, or it'll say you're all done.
If it says you're all done, start up steam and click games. Launch half-life itself and it'll ask what games you want to convert, this will be HL, TFC, CS, DOD, DM, Richocet, all that stuff. Considering this 388 mb version has HL and CS pre-cached, unselect all and only keep CS and HL selected, then continue. It'll tell you it's converting, but it's actually not, since you already have it installed there, so it'll go pretty damn fast. But, it'll lock up. It'll minimize, go non responsive, won't allow you to do anything, ctrl alt del will either show you 100% cpu usage or none at all. DON'T TOUCH IT. Steam's funky. Whenever it uploads, downloads, updates or has a conference with Gabe over world domination, it'll do this. When it's done, HL and CS should be installed right. But, now at games, right click CS, properties, and make Automatic Updates "Always keep this game up to date", do the same for HL. It might lock up after you click close, BUT LEAVE IT RUN! It'll just update.

You can play CS 1.6, play HLSP, check the new awesome CS background and models, and have fun.

Now..for NS, and all the other mods that aren't pre-cached. In C:\Program Files\Steam, there's now a dir called steamapps, and in there will be your email addy...so:
C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\silent_malice@hotmail.com in my case, that will be your user account. You can always make multiple accounts, and in there is HL and it's mods stored, it'll create them all for cs and dod too, sometimes the HL dir isn't there til you actually play a HLSP game, so start up HL if you need to.
Now copy paste your NS dir from your hold hl dir, to C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\youremailaddy\half-life, then restart steam and open games, there will be "Natural Selection" under third party games. If everything goes right, you can install/play it from there, even though the filter's messed up. I'm doing this myself right now and I gotta run, so can't check it out fully, but that's it so far. Good luck!

Edit: If you require the file "fmod.dll", copy it from your old HL folder, C:\Sierra\Half-life most likely, there should be an fmod.dll in there, to C:\Program files\steam\steamapps\youremailaddy\half-life, and put it in that dir. That should get it all to work.

Also, if you can't connect to steam or your friend list isn't working, give it time. You can check out the steam network at <a href='http://www.steampowered.com/status.html' target='_blank'>http://www.steampowered.com/status.html</a>

someone explain to me what this pre-caching means. Is it a good thing in any way? Does it make the game run faster? Will it ever affect NS? All I know is it takes up more hard drive space than I have to spare. My processor is a 733 mhz one. If I give up the hard drive space, will Steam make me run HL faster or slower?

great guide, I vote for sticky.

    Anyone else?

    STICKY.

And is there only one server that has people playing NS with other servers empty? Or is it a glitch.

Thanks for the feedback, as far as I can tell, reinstalling multiple times sometimes gets it to work.

And to DiscoZombie, I have an 866 mhz processor, it works slow as hell for me as well, but the pre-caching basically means you already download cs 1.6 and hlsp with the 388 mb version. With the 500k version, you have to download HLSP and every mod you want to play, witht he 388mb version, it's done faster and better, so yes, it's worth it.

been waiting through 500 people on fileplanet to get it... with my luck it will crash soon.

WOOT! fileplanet can screw itself, <a href='ftp://gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk/blueyondergames/halflife/steam/client/win32/SteamInstall_CS.exe' target='_blank'>blueyounder has it!</a>

Updated some stuff, included the fmod.dll thingy, I suggest not doing that unless Steam specifically asks for it though.

    Good luck.

Most likely a server you're on is down right now, and mind you, any game you start using steam it'll say "Preparing to play <game>", but usually it kicks in after 20 seconds.

Just to note, that if you've already uninstalled Steam via Unwise, you shouldn't have to go to your registry at all. There will be no keys.

Well, I managed to get NS working in steam, however... after a round ends, I <i>always</i> crash. That's not fun at all.

Anybody else crashing after rounds end and everyone is sent back to the readyroom? I hope I'm not the only person with this problem. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
