Meanwhile, Windows sales climbed 11 percent to more than $10 billion last year, according to IDC analyst Al Gillen.
"The Linux operating system market, from a revenue perspective, accounts for one half of 1 percent of the total operating system revenue each year, or roughly two days' worth of Microsoft's operating system revenue," Gillen said. I wonder what the REAL numbers are? Like, how many servers run a flavour of Linux sompared to Windows, and how many desktops run Linux.
EDIT: $299 CDN ! For an "Upgrade Package"! Dayamn...
EDIT AGAIN:
Okay, Windows XP Pro is $499 CDN, and RedHat Linux 7.3 Pro is $199 USD. Thing is, RedHat is also a completely free download. You're paying for the support, and documentation. You also get a full version of StarOffice 5.2 .
Microsoft charges you anytime you call support, and it is NOT cheap. Also, Office XP is hella expensive too.
So, to wrap up my point: Microsoft products cost more per unit than open source alternatives. So, price comparison is not fair.
Do you seriously want to argue the merits of Linux vs. Microsoft Operating Systems?
I'm a server engineer, so I'm not really discussing desktop OS's as much, like (I think) you are. But they are a factor as well.
And, ummm, $199USD is $313.79CAD. That isn't much cost difference there.

To be honest, the only reason I use Windows is because of game performance. If Linux could run Windows games as well as Windows could, then I would switch over in no time. There is nothing that Windows can do that Linux cannot. If I'm being ignorant here, then please, do correct me.
But I really don't know what you're arguing here, or if you are even arguing. That article wasn't really an opinion piece, and you really aren't taking a stand either way. From the subject line of your post, I inferered that you were anti-Linux. I may be wrong though.
Like you, the only thing that I dont like about linux is the lack of supprt/performance when playing games... If I ever have to use a computer and not have any games on it (which will probably be never ), it's getting linux put on it faster than you can say monopoly...
and especialy it's stability but the lack of games and support for games makes the OS not gamer friendly.
However experts expect that in 5 yrs Linux will overtrow Windows as most commonly used operating system.
hopefully they start to release some version of Linux soon with prebuild pc's
Also, it's unfair to compare "sales" of both operating systems since most people who get linux get it via download, not via their local, friendly computer store.
Not anti-linux. Just showing an interesting article that was not too axe-grindy. The topic was due to the fact that Linux users are none-too-humorous about their OS. They take it all so seriously.
If you don't mind me asking MonsE, what does a "server engineer" do? I'm studying Physics now, but that's not for me. I plan on finishing my degree then taking something computer-related in college. I'm really not sure what I want to get into though.
Ideally, I would design games for a living.
Remember that there is 200+ Linux distros, these are free for download. It is impossible to track installed Linux copies. Besides, why bother? Linux is something that is meant to exsist without having to be sold commerically to survive.
So what if XP is selling like crazy, THE COMMON MASSMARKET WINDOWS USER IS A DUMMY!(don't get offended here everyone, keyword is "massmarket") In fact there is alot of interest in Linux as a corporate replacement for windows(by some corps anyways).
Go to http://www.windows-sucks.com free your mind and your OS will follow. Oh and MonsE, go there and link the article at their forums. They won't bite or flame you, as long as you don't act like an immature flamer yourself. I'd like to see what they have to say about it...
(oh and well your at it, plug NS, there is alot of HL lovers there too)
I am a consultant, designing networks of servers for companies. My main paycheck comes from doing thin-client computing like Citrix, but I also work on regular NT/2K application servers, databases, email systems, web servers, and so on. I also write code for maintenance, montitoring, distributiuon systems, and security. I tend to work on large scale implementations.

I did tech support a while ago, and we had to use a citrix portal (not sure if that's the right term) to get to our ticket logging software. It was a pain. ;P
