GG, you lost. If you haven't upgraded your armory by the time they *get onos* you are a bad COM™.

Mmm.. a cheaper and easier alternative to dropping a 15 res equipment is dropping 3x10 res equipment and having 4 people perform a specific tactical manuveur? Heh. Not to mention this strategy relies on getting close to a cow, which is the last place you want to be, a is high risk, has 4 people focusing on one task etc tec. This is exactly the kind of thing I am *against* and why I posted the thread. K.I.S.S.

Couldn't agree more.
Shotties are nice and all, as are properly implemented tactics, but this maneuveur is wrecked by the cheapest and nastiest little weapon the kharaa have - the one or two skulks following the onos to wrack up some RFK from stragglers.
Skulk---> SG
Onos- -<SG>- - -> Bait
Skulk---> SG
Oh look, the "bait" is suddenly left with one, two, or no active skulks, the trap exposed, _perhaps_ less backup (if the skulkies were of any use) and either a fleeing Onos, or a giant horn through the solar plexus.

Owie.

I generally see the hmg as an upgraded lmg and its very priceworthy nowadays...

However, the best squads are usually the ones with mixed weapons, say 3 hmgs 1 sg and one gl would prove to be very succesful against almost anything, as it has a good overall damage, good against most building s and a shotgun to kill fades and onos getting a bit too close...
SGs are excelent at killing fleeing fades and wounded onos, the high dmg in a short time is usually a surprise for bigger aliens.

I try to pass out hmg every now and then but everyone prefers shotguns in my experience and they are far more versatile in 8-10 min. portion of game (when the game is really won). taking down there structures and raking in rfk from repeated skulk kills crowns this fiSUYFl of boomstick numero #1.

Here is what I find odd in all the posts on this forum...

Don't you have any experience on being alien? Same goes for being Marine, when posting in the Alien strat section.

I play the game a lot, and I go random the vast majority of the time so I play both sides. Now, when I am an alien, a Marine with a shotgun is annoying, but unless there's several of them and they are heading for our hive, I don't care that much. The first sight of an HMG I let people know they have it, and where. When someone gets killed by the HMG for the first time on the map there is always an "They have HMG's!". Simply put, as an Alien, HMG's scare me, shotguns don't. As a cow, especially, HMG's scare me, shotguns don't.

Don't really have a point other then I am surprised that people who play the game would disagree on this, wonder how much they play and as what.

TBH i'm not happy to see either

I must admit however seeing HMGs does also foreshadow HA/JPs so there a little scarier in that sense.

My .02, adjust for inflation:

I like Shotties, but only with certain caveats; they're relatively cheap, available early game, and if you armory-hump, you can carry almost enough reload to kill a hive by yourself!!), and they reload (one to three rounds if you're in a hurry) relatively quickly... Shotties are best used against Kharaa chambers- even (just one) OC- you might even kill it before it kills you. In this capacity, shotties are second best only to GLs- which let you stand off, but don't guarantee hits if you shoot wrong and have a delay.... Shotties deal damage in big, two-fisted chunks (which lends to kills rather than redeems) rather than drooling it out over several seconds, they fire decently fast, and they're not much good against any moving target (esp. one that's blinking, flying or leaping) until it's right up and knocking on your visor plate....

I have to agree with this. If I see a marine with a weapon, or even if I am able to tell they have higher level armor and weapons, then I let my team know. It just doesn't make sense to cut off communication lines.

Meh Im afaraid of the HMG,not the shotgun,because celerity can outrun their mouse sensitivity,silence just plain confuses....and that's about it

When I am a marine I am VERY grateful that the Comm has given me an HMG,because I know that I will have raw firepower,without a range disadvantage which s Shotgun does

Besides,if you have 4 marines in HA, 3 armed with HMGs and you were an Onos with Regen,wouldn't you be scared to death already??

And the HMG is like 15 res....that's only an added 5 res to a shotgun,it's not like you're gonna be on a real tight budget are you?

Considering that everyone that says its cheaper makes strategies where they have 3 Marines each with a shotty, it just doesn't make sense to say that it costs less. If you need 3 shotties (30 res) to do the job of something that is 15 res, then you are not saving res. Repeat YOU ARE NOT SAVING RES!!! Sillies.

the sg is anti onos in the respect that:

Onos attacks group of lmg marines, does ok with killing whilst taking moderate dmg but not enough to merit running away, comm drops a shotgun and onos gets ambushed on retreat/mid health and dies.

I think thats what people mean when they say its an anti onos weapon?

In my opinion, the reason why shotties are considered onos killing weapons is NOT because of it's raw damage but the time frame in which it deals it.

HMGs deal damage in a fast stream. This has the effect of "pulling" the onos' health through the redemption zone. Because of the duration in that zone, there is a higher chance of a redemption occuring. For the shotgun, all it's damage is concentrated in quick bursts. IF a proper shotgun blast is fired JUST before the redemption zone, or a short time into it, the Onos will probably die since the health cannot stand that sudden impact. That, is the major reason why shotties are considered to be onos killers, only for those redemption types I must add.

HMGs deal a LOT of damage over a period of time. Shotguns deal HUGE amounts of damage in a burst, IF you get your aim and timing right. HMGs to wipe out the health, shotguns to finish off. That's what you'll see. A bunch of shotties scare onos, sure....but how many are you really throwing out to do that? 5? 6? 8?
6 shotties are the same price as 4 HMGs. HMGs are far easier to use though, since you can re-adjust your aim without loosing too much power, and will cut through a regen/carapace onos far faster than shotties will since you'll churn them up from range while they are trying to close in. It might redemption before it gets to you, but then again, it didn't do anything, did it?

Just to restate my original point. HMGs IMHO cut through onos health far better than shotties. Shotties are needed however to finish off the brute to avoid it's redemption due to its nature to deal it's damage in a single strike
