This video just made it official: I'm replacing my GeForce2 for a Radeon 9600 the moment I see a price drop in November.

600? Why not... 800?!

Because according to the ValvE presentation slides on [H]ardOCP, if you look at both the frames per second and the video card prices from pricewatch.com, you get this graph:

[edit]Coil has made us aware that more sites have graphs of these presentations, and the "Radeon 9600" may be a typo that should instead read "9600 Pro." Makes sense, since the 9800 listed is a pro model as well.[/edit]

Thanx for the link. I had just gotten in line to dl this thing on Fileplanet, and I would have to wait around 15 mins before I could start dling it. Now I only have to wait around 5 mins to finish dling it. Thanx much.

I too will have to upgrade my computer components soon. Was already planning a 512 mb ddr stick or ram, I think a new video card is in order as well.

I hear there's a typo on that graph involving the 9600; something about one of them being a 9600 pro.
Now you just have to wonder if it's the 9600 pro that got the big marks or if they typod the 9800 pro

I have just finished watching the video. It is nothing truly of spectacular graphics wise. Light passes through windows in with beams that change with each angle of view. Stepping out, you see a city FOR MILES. No .bmp background or fog crap, it IS a city (and the citadel in the background distance). Then we have shiny metal reflections and reflections off ceiling tiles that also morph as the player moves. Then two orbs appear in the demo, one metallic and the other liquid-like to show other lighting possibilites disco-ball style.
But the coup de grace was the ant-lion. Holy !@#$ cow. The skin and model is so detailed. There are reflections, bumps, details that do not pixellate, even when WAY up close. And then the beak is shiny and the entity itself breathes and moves.
All this with no framerate problems (except for the video itself).
Of course, two conclusions can be made from this demo:
1 ) The graphics will be truly spectacular, even with a certain other *three-quel* on its way.
2 ) I need to get a new processor and graphics card.

Indeed Javert.

Also keep in mind the reason there's no FPS drop is this Bink is just a movie format, like an AVI or MPEG. You're not actually running any polygons or anything. Its just recorded in a CPU intensive lossless format...

Just got finished watching the video, and man... wow. Completely amazing stuff. Just as Javert said, you can see the city for miles in every direction, and the dark stormclouds in the sky to one side are just amazing. And the sounds, man, you can hear the wind blowing through this wooden building, then it moves into an alleyway and you hear it howling against the walls. This is gonna be a sweet game... I am sure of it even moreso now than before.

I am seriously going to need some more ram and a new video card.

Seems very nice... I am just imagining the ant-lion as a Skulk... Imagine all the NS models like that... Ohhhhhhhhhh baby.

This has actually got me excited about HL2. Shame I will be getting a new computer November time :S

Im starting to download this and Im getting 37-38 kbps

Sometimes it is worthy being called broadband, but for gaming....nah....

****. The site is blocked by the library. Typically, it's got broadband (I treat this place like a cybercafe) and if I can't get the file up I'll be stuck downloading it at a wonderful 4kbps...

wee I got disconnected and had to restart. Have a better speed now so I guess it's a good thing.

Hmm I'm Dling at 120kbps so it'll take about 14 minutes... I can't wait to watch the new video, the last ones were amazing but this one is set up for Directx9 like it should be. Who wants to watch a preview for the best graphical game in the world in low-poly?
• RaVeRaVe Join Date: 2003-06-20 Member: 17538Members
OMG

I downloaded on my oh-so crap PC (the one without the GeForce) and it looks friggin ACE!

Practically very high-detailed,and even better is that my PC had no FPS loss the whole time....yay

just one word: OMG WOW

Too short, but I already watched it 5 times

There was only one deceiving part imo, and that's when he goes in that little alley like thing with all those mirrorish plated roofs. Might be just me but it didn't look right. The rest was wonderful though

I have no idea why everyone thinks they need to upgrade. I've got 1.3 athlon, 512, Geforce4 Ti4200. I have no reason to think I've got to upgrade, espescially the requirements are 700Mhz and DX6 gen card

Because unless you have a current generation video card like a 9800 ATI or Nvidia FX 5800, you are not truly DirectX9 compatible. Basically, your card will not look nearly as good as this. There are requirements, and there are recommendations - you will be meeting requirements. This was done on a 9800 Pro (very much like mine ).

I think this video was truly amazing - the lighting especially was just natural. It really looked almost like a pre-rendered movie, not like something you'd see ingame. Between this and Doom3 and DeusEx2, I am going to be giving my new card a workout.

That said, it's still going to look saucy on a GeForce 4 Ti. It won't quite reach the pinnacle of DX9 yet with the physics, audiophilic glory etc. it'll make one hell of a spectacle.
People should count themselves lucky they can afford to pay extortion in money form for technology
