So now I have to reinstall. I'm thinking of installing Linux.

Only the Dedicated server. You cannot play the half-life game on Linux without using a Windows emulator like VMWare, WINE, Lindows, etc.

My friend uses lindows, is "fairly" simple to set up. But what do you have to loose if you back up all your files and such. I know there are some pretty good free linux systems out there you can try, I just cant think of them right now :/

Lindows? Where'd they come up with that one? :-P

Well, I guess Windex is already taken (that blue window cleaning stuff) :-D

I'm also thinking of reformatting/repartitioning my HD, and installing both Windows and Linux on different partitions.

You also might want to look for Mandrake 8.* (I think its 8.something) Gamers edition -- it apparently comes with a Linux version of The Sims, as well as an improved version of WINE for running all your favorite windows games/applications on Linux!
