Timeline:
We will be releasing the dedicated server binaries later today.
Tomorrow we will be releasing the client.
In a couple of weeks we will make this update mandatory.
What is it:
This release is converting all users to Steam. When you install the client
you will need to have a valid HL or CStrike CD-Key. Dedicated servers will
need to create accounts but will NOT need to enter a cd-key. At no point
will anyone have to enter credit card details. In the future there will be
the option to purchase the "Platinum Pack" via Steam if you don't currently
own a copy.
This release consists of: Counter-Strike 1.6, Half-Life, TeamFortress
Classic, DMC, Ricochet and Day-of-Defeat 1.0.

Steam Issues:
Q: Can I use Steam with a modem?
A: Yes, steam will work for modem users.
Q: Is WON going away?
A: Yes, once we have completed the rollover we will slowly remove parts of
the WON system as they become obsolete.
Q: Has the net code been changed since the beta?
A: No, apart from small bug fixes.
Q: Will my existing 3rd party programs work (i.e Admin Mod, CDeath, ...).
A: In general yes, all existing 3rd party programs can still work under
Steam. The individual authors of each program will need to inform their
users of any install directory or configuration changes.
Q: Do I need to alter my firewall setup?
A: Steam requires some extra ports to be opened for outgoing access, read
this page for details:
<a href='http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=faq&id=1050915505,27362300,105091' target='_blank'>http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area...27362300,105091</a>

Q: What happens to my current banlist?
A: Everyone will be getting assigned a new Steam ID and it will not be
possible to convert old banlists.

There is also a thread that is sort of about this below, but it focusses on the topic of Steam vs. Won id's. That is a significant issue, but what I am more concerned about is this. There is a sticky on these forums that basically says that NS doesn't support the latest HLDS (4.1.1.1), NS still works best under HLDS 4.1.1.0. I'm guessing that 4.1.1.1 was a step between 4.1.1.0 and 1.1.2.0, so are we going to have the same nasty performance issues under 1.1.2.0 that we had under 4.1.1.1? Is NS fully compatible with 1.1.2.0?
I personally can't believe that Valve would make an announcement of this magnitude and then expect all the Half-Life mods to somehow be fully compatible, and all the servers on the planet tested and ready to roll in two weeks. This sort of announcement should have had a lead time of at least 2 months IMHO.

Comments
However, people will not have to update today but will have to update when won is shut down in about 2 weeks time.
Contrary to what you may think, I am not an idiot. I am also on Valve's HLDS mailing list. I run a small clan, and the small server for that clan. I don't just create a listen server and invite my buddies to join. My servers have the latest Metamod and Adminmod, and the latest versions of several plugins, including Statsme, for the mods that it works with. I run 5 different mods and have set up and experimented with at least 3 others. I use Psychostats and I have a clan website where these stats are posted. I have worked with the developers for bots for two different mods, I am currently working on one. I frequent forums involved in all those mods, DOD, NS, FA, TFC, BG as well as the forums for all the different mods and plugins that I use (Metamod, Adminmod, Statsme, LodD, etc. etc.).
So when you say it is "widely known" I wonder exactly what you mean by that? I've known Steam was coming down the pipe for at least a year. I never knew it was going to replace HLDS. I didn't know it was going to be mandatory for everyone, servers and clients, and there is a reasonable chance that I am in the top 10 - 20% of those "in the know" when it comes to Half-Life players and admins.

I'm not sure what planet you are on, but on my planet 2 weeks goes by awfully quickly, especially when you have a server with at least half a dozen plugins to update and test.
P.S.: Nice selection of maps you have on your site!

Wow talk about taking things the wrong way, i didnt mean to offend you or anything <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
With regards to it being widely known that steam steam is repalcing hlds this has been known about for a while ever since (i forgot which version of hlds) added the steam gui (win32) and probably before that, as there have been numerous announcements on the steam forums although ive only been a memebr of themf or the past month.
However, HLDS is not being 100% replaced the hlds.exe remains and one can still run multiple servers the only thing that is changing is having the requirement of steam.
Adminmod and amxmod have already been updated to work with steam, amxmod was doen a few weeks ago same with adminmod although reserve slots have only just been fixed to work with it. Metamod works fine with Steam, there are issues of it crashign cs 1.6beta servers if you try to run bots but toherwise there are no problems.
Statsme and virtually all other plugins work with steam fine. The only plugins that will have a problema re custom plugins that directly use the wonid feature and these will simply have to be changed to use steamids. Psychostats also works fine with steam ids (you just need to make one minor change as detailed on thier forums)
So there should be virtually no hassle for 95% of people. Creating a new install woudl be best for msot people and then simply download the latest versions and reset it up. For most people i will be surrpised if it takes longer than 30 mins to install the server. (Not counting installing NS as a compatible version will probably have to be made)

Someone like me, who didn't beta test Steam, and wasn't particularily interested in it, probably would know about as much as I do about it, or less. I suspect that is probably the majority of Half-Life players, and maybe even a majority of Half-Life admins. But I could be wrong, maybe I am an idiot and I am the only one who didn't know...

If you are correct, that is a good thing, however, why did that announcement I posted call the release "HLDS 1.1.2.0?" If I can run this in conjunction with HLDS 1.1.1.0, that will certainly go a long way towards relieving some of my anxiety.
Thanks for the answers at any rate, and my apologies if I came across somewhat harshly...

Well, this is what i know from announcements on the steam forum and other places.
You have to signup for a free account to run a steam server. The steam server account does not need a cd key.
You can run more than one server per pc
There is a separate steam dedicated server version to the client
In the beta there was/is a hlds.exe
So im assuming that it will be some sort of stripped down steam client that will only work with the server.
I really doubt that any 'old' hlds will work. But this may not be a abd thing as it depends how the new system will run
Which sorta returns to the main point of my original post. The last version of HLDS prior to 1.1.2.0, was 1.1.1.1, which, quite frankly, was a disaster. I have two mods that have to use 1.1.1.1, I instantly lost 2 off my server size, and it took me months to figure out how to tweak the server and clients so that players on dial up could use my server.
Where possible I have stuck with the old version of HLDS, 1.1.1.0, because the net code is obviously superior, either that or 1.1.1.1 adds stress on bandwidth for some other reason. If 1.1.2.0 is built on 1.1.1.1, then I sincerely hope the net code has been radically improved. Two weeks worth of notice for this sort of thing, to the general public, those not inside the Steam loop, is not enough, IMHO.
I now realize that everyone knew about Steam except me... I was an idiot...
