I know this isn't really related to NS, but I'm posting it here instead of off topic for the following reasons: 1. Monse made a guy repost his problem which had nothing to do with NS in here because he posted it in the off topic forums (gg nub, make him ask the exact same people in a different part of the forum, yeah, that ought to help him), which would suggest that I should ask about any computer related problems here, and 2. I can't play NS because of it.

Last week I bought a Hercules Muse Lt. soundcard, everything went well at first, it worked fine and all was well, but then I had to restart, the comp froze at startup, so I restarted again, and guess what? The sound didn't work! I spent the next few hours trying to fix it, chronic restarting, reinstalling the driver, putting the soundcard in a different pci slot, trying the WHQL drivers, trying the updated ones on the internet, and finally I found one that worked, albeit with half the features of the regular ones, I thought everything was fine after that, but I don't have that sort of luck, upon trying to play a game, I found that right away it stopped responding and just sat there indefinitely, trying to end it with the task manager resulted in the entire computer locking up, forcing me to restart, it still happened after that, with all my games. "WTH? But Winamp is working!" I thought.

It turns out trying to use directsound causes this, so basically every app that uses directsound freezes. I would return the Muse, but I tried my old soundcard, and (who didn't see this one coming) it still happens! (yes, I uninstalled the drivers for the muse and installed the ones for my old one) I can't disable directsound with dxdiag because it needs to initilize DS in order to get the DS tab, causing it to freeze, and I don't know of any other way. Have I overlooked some tiny but lethal detail? Whats going on, and how can I fix this?

My system specs (as if they matter) are as follows:
Win98SE
500mhz celeron
256mbs ram
Muse Lt. soundcard (teh troublemaker!!1111111111one)
Geforce2mx
etc.

Have you tried simply booting into safe mode, uninstalling the hardware via Device Manager, and then rebooting and seeing if the OS redetects it and corrects the problem? And if that didn't work, doing the same, but with NO sound device physically attached to the machine?

    Well have ya.... nub?

Alright, first of all, if you would have read my post, I don't need to boot into safe mode, as long as I don't run any programs that use directsound I'm ok, second of all, one of the things I did was

QUOTE (Pulse)

reinstalling the driver

which involves, among other things, removing the soundcard with the device manager and rebooting. Removing the soundcard completely lets the applications run, but with no sound (obviously), and no extra options to change or anything, so thats not a big help. I also completely forgot to tell you which OS I have. Not that anyone noticed, its 98SE.

And one final thing, MonsE... read the entire post so you don't have to tell me to do things I already did, its clear that you just skimmed through it, saw "soundcard" and "problem" and formulated your answer from that.

Well it sounds like you're going to be fixing it yourself after that tiresome little rant. I may have skimmed it for details, but most of what you complain about you fail to explain and just leave us to assume it. I am also not getting paid to sit here and give you tech support - my time is limited.

    Have a nice day.
