Segmentation Fault While Server Startup

Hi,

I want to upgrade my server to the new version 2.01d from the old 1.x version.
I installed the hl version 3.1.1.1d with the extra bug fic for natural selection.

If I start the server it crashed with the following message on stdout :

#######################
WON Auth Server
Server IP address xx.xx.xx.xx:yyyyy
FATAL ERROR (shutting down): File read failure
./hlds_run: line 14: 10632 Segmentation fault $HL_CMD
Add "-debug" to the ./hlds_run command line to generate a debug.log to help with solving this problem
Mon Sep 8 18:03:31 CEST 2003: Server restart in 10 seconds
Mon Sep 8 18:03:34 CEST 2003: Server Quit
#######################

the debug output his not really a help ...

I started the server with the following command as root
./hlds_run -game ns +ip xx.xx.xx.xx +port yyyyy +sv_lan 0 +maxplayers 20 +map ns_nothing.bsp

The server is installed with Linux Slackware 8.0 and Kernel 2.4..22 and gcc 2.95.3. It is powered by AMD Athlon 2400+ with 768MB RAM on a Epox motherboard.

Can anybody help me ?

Thanks

Wait, you went from 1.04 to 2.01d? Did you install the NS 2.0 stuff first? If not that could easily be your problem. You need to start clean, delete all of your old stuff and install a fresh copy of HLDS and a fresh NS 2.0 install.

Please do not run the server as root, you risk a lot by doing that. Run it as a user and use 3.1.1.0c with the boffix patch to lower your CPU usage.

If you need help installing this stuff both disq and I have guides youc an follow.

You can find disq's guide in the General Server Support forum pinned at the top. It's called "The Complete X.1.1.0 Thread"

My guides can be found on my website: <a href='http://www.vadakill.com/nsguides' target='_blank'>http://www.vadakill.com/nsguides</a>

ok I will test the 3.1.1.0c hl version and read you page. I hope thats it.

I installed a complete new hl and ns version - no update from the old 1.x version.

I try to run the server with root permissions only to be on the safe side, that it is not a permission problem. Normally I started the server with another user, of course.

Why explain the method over and over again when once is enough. Apparently it works well, I'm just making people aware of the guides who may not know they are there otherwise.

Glad it helped you fix your server, grob. I appreciate when something I do helps lessen the agony for another admin. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
