    the nforce chipset is overpriced, I'd buy a board from ECS the k7s5a with a SiS735 chipset, that's the board I use with my Athlon XP 1800+ and ddr ram

    I think he's buying the nforce board exclusively because of the onboard video. Didn't he say he had a voodoo3 or somesuch?

    also, the nforce has excellent on-board sound, just a tiny bit below the SB Audigy Platinum.

    So the only reason you could call it overpriced is if you were going to eschew both the onboard video and sound. otherwise, it's a great value.

    just to continue the flow of talk about crappy pc's here mine:

    P3 600Mhz
    128 MB RAM
    Voodoo 3 8Mb
    30 GB HDD

    i suggest to all those voodoo owners to download along with the official drivers (if u havent aready) the wicked gl drivers at www.wicked3d.com. they helped boost my performance in DoD (which was running ok before but now runs MUCH smoother.) CS and all the other mods run perfectly as always...now to wait and see how NS copes...

    That's almost as same as mine <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->
    Only I got a 512 Kbit DSL modem and my Riva TNT 2 is 32 MB (dunno about yours)

    HL really doesn't take <i>that</i> much to run REALLY good.. i have 450mhz P3, 384 megs of RAM, and a GeForce3.. (and I only have a 1x AGP) and I can run HL at 1280x1024 OpenGL and I get between 45-95 fps..

    Thankfully I won't have to put up with it much longer.. soon I'll get a 2.0ghz, 1 gig of ram, and a GeForce4 Ti 4600..

    Counts days until arrival...

    What are you going to do with the Geforce 3?

    More importantly, can I have it?

    My computer is:
    AMD K2 533 mhz
    312 MB ram
    Voodoo3 3000 16mb (I run WickedGL 640x480 in HL)
    Win XP

    It seems better than some of my fellow "bad computer" types.  However I pull very low FPS in Half-Life, even though I have WickedGL installed which is rumored to double FPS.

    Counter-strike runs terribly for me.  However, front line force, a much more graphics intensive mod, runs GREAT (except for some maps).  The reason being that in FLF you can turn off graphical details like sparks, tracers, high quality models, etc.

    I hope in NS that you can turn off graphical effects, that would be a godsend.

    i think its not the comp that causes the speed problem, i think its the game...
    i mean, if you have a really ###### (please, excuse me. getting point across) computer like my old one (120mhz, 128mb ram, 4gig HD) and run Duke Nukem 3D on it, it'll run fine as long as there arn't 20+ enemies on the screen... and the textures are low detail.
    but when i run a mod of Duke Nukem 3D that has alot of detail, it all gets REALLY lagged up, i mean, sometimes i cant even acess the menu! <!--emo&:(--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('><!--endemo-->  ctrl, alt, and delete later, im on my desktop.

    the mod for Duke 3D i was running was a StarShip Troopers mod. it looks REALLY nice, compared to the original Duke 3D i play. this leads me to speculate that too much eye candy can damage the computer's virutal stomach and make it "Throw up" (basically, freeze or screw up in some other way.)

    PS:  <!--emo&:asrifle:--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/asrifle.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':asrifle:'><!--endemo-->  <!--emo&:pudgy:--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/pudgy.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':pudgy:'><!--endemo-->

    Flayra is coding as much as he can to keep machine requirements low; NS requirements will only be slightly higher than the *original* HL requirements.  For instance, he imposes r_speed limits on mappers, which keeps your computer from having to render too much map detail at once.
