Make sure you use the "Tune Monitor for Optimal Gamma" program that installs with NS. You should be able to find it through the Start menu under Natural Selection.
This is a known issue and is well documented. The NS team developed a temporary fix that fixes the middles part of the screen. It id bound to the hotkey 'f'.

Does that help? Remember that NS is meant to be dark, it's part of the atmosphere! BTW, I was kidding about the flashlight thing. Sheesh. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Lol! That was a good one <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
Hey! Appreciated! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> I seem to make more jokes than sensible replies...
The down side to this is that black surfaces become dull grey, whilst other colours loose contrast. The dark and dingy suits my play fine. However as a marine, you may want to turn up the gamma to hunt those skulks.
If you have a monitor with hot-settings, you could even set it to have high brightness early game (for skulk hunts,) and then proper colours later on (to enjoy the atmosphere more).
