Ns outpost

<div class="IPBDescription">"under construction"</div>I was looking through RR.org's link list and was wondering what kind of site The Outpost is going to be. All the other links led to niche sites with maps, fan art and so on. Is The Outpost going to be the central community site with news, reports and (most important) some good forums suited as a gathering place for the NS players?

Just wondering whether the "central fan site" position is still vacant. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

Between RR.org and N-S.org what other central community site could you need? Between them you already have news, reports and some good forums suited as a gathering place for the NS players.

But those are the official sites, controlled by the development team. Where would you find unbiased opinions, where a forum on which you can speak freely? Don't get me wrong, official forums are always a great tool to get in touch with the development team and give them some feedback. I appreciate them as what they are.

But they are not suited for some friendly community talk about whatever subject comes to your mind; just look at all the threads being closed for no reason and posts being deleted and edited. That's too much moderation for me, I don't feel comfortable.

    Now, what *is* The Outpost?

The outpost is supposedly going to be the gameplay site. You know, the one with all the cool screenshots and strategy tips.

And the upcoming Command Console is going to be the central fan site. It's run by me and SentrySteve.

I admit we've been a bit draconian with locking threads.  We're new at this, and we're still learning how to run things properly.

We'll be opening up strategy and tactics forum when we release, and I hope this will be the central meeting place for people, and that you DO feel comfortable posting here.  Keep in mind that the small amount of moderation and censorship DOES keep out a lot of garbage, so hopefully you find it a good trade-off.

I love discussing tactics, so I will definitely appreciate that forum too. I also don't mind your moderators deleting obvious spam or stepping in to prevent flames/insults.

However, when threads are aggressively policed for off-topicness it makes me feel like I'm back in school again or in some kind of debating club, not in a friendly talk with fellow gamers. When people talk, they digress, it's human. The thread would die off soon enough when others appear, but locking it prematurely frustrates me. That's why I miss a forum that can instill a sense of community.

The only thing I really want from the N-S team (besides supporting the game and community obviously) is to STAY ON TOP OF CHEATS.

Alot of mods just release their mod, make thier patches every now and then, and just seem like they cover their eyes when there are sites dedicated to people trying to cheat in *their* game.

I wish more mods would make posts on their sites sort of like "We know about this bug that gives all research, and we are working it out. Until then, we advise all admins to blah blah blah." Sure most mods fix exploits and such in patches but it is very down-played. You see a line in the changes from the patch (v.1 - v.2 "Removed swtich team inf health bug") but you hardly see any discussion about it openly on the mod teams' sites.

Since this mod is going to be taking off soon, I think it is very important for the NS team to make good relationships will the server admins of NS servers.. make sure the Admins are knowledgeable of bugs and exploits and know how to spot them. I am not saying NS is going to be a buggy POS, but there are almost ALWAYS one sequence or pinhole in the code that people with too much time on their hands will explore.

All I want is the mod team to keep on top of all cheat sites and examine how they work to quickly patch up any holes, not just advise "Watch your servers." and pretend nothing is happening.

It takes only one cheater to ruin a server if there are no admins there, and so destroying cheaters quickly is a very important part of putting a mod out to the community and waiting for it to catch on.
