Stereoscopic 3d Images

teh funneh images that cause eystrain
I've allways liked 'stereoscopic' because they are simple and work so well so I slapped some togheter with NS models(piece of cake really if you have no special requirements for consistency between models etc or intend to use many in one scene).

The idea is to take 2 images from slightly different angles, one representing your right eye and one your left. Put the images side by side and view them in a special way to get the illusion of 3-d. There are to variants, one 'crosseyed' which is easy and one parallell eyed which doesn't seem to work well for large images. I used the crosseyed version.

View the left image with the right-eye and the right with your left and try to keep your head level.

First off a 3-d skulk

Aggle.. the problem is, I'm used to doing parallel-eye. It's hard to switch back to crosseye, and is painful to do these parallel... visually confusing to have limbs flickering and appearing further forward than they should. :b

That fade is amazing. Awesome job man.

When I do those 'hidden 3-d pictures' I always do parallel...but I couldn't get that to work on these. Crosseyed work though. But it messes my eyes up to do it too much.

Awesome. I agree with the onos idea...or teh cute fattay

This freaking owns! It took a while to focus while looking crosseyed, but this is amazing! Post moar! And any links to other ones!

get hl model viewer prog. open up a model of choice. look at it from one direction and take a screenie, look at it from a slightly different direction(rotate it by a tiny bit) and take a screenie. Open up a descent image editor and crop out the interesting bit(the model hopefully ) and put the images side by side and at the right hight. If you put the images in the 'wrong order' crosseyed will look inverted and parrallell eyed will work, do it the other way around and crosseyed will work but that evil parallell eyed will not .

Then it's just a matter of saving the image in a descent format that takes as little place and as descent quality as possible and spaming the offtopic board with it.

That sounds simple enough. When I gain enough mastry over OpenGL I might whip up an animated visual doodle that uses this technique (don't hold your breath ).

These images exploit that you can't really see 3d even when you look at real things you see 2 2-d images from 2 different angles and you brain combines them and makes them seem 3d. What stereoscopic 3d-images do is to put 2 images from slightly different perspective right next to each other, these use the crosseyed scheme. View the left image with your right eye and the right image with you left eye simoultaneously and try to get them into focus. Your crossing your eyes quite alot but trying to focus on a point a bit further away(at the monitor).

I can't really blame you if you have trouble doing this as I have trouble with the parallell eyed scheme of stereoscopic 3-d images .

I think i'm doing it wrong.

I look at the screen kind of close, and let my eyes relax until the images move a bit closer together, then I lean back a bit.

I works, but instead of one 3D image, I see two! Am I doing something wrong?

Nil it Might be easier to sit further away from the screen as you wont have to cross your eyes too much. If you sit 20 cm from the screen you have to stare at a point about 5 cm away which does really not feel nice.

Both your eyes can of course see both images at the same time, but the trick is to get the right eye to look straight at the left image and the left eye to look at the corresponding point in the other one.

you will see like this when it is done right, side by side: odd blinking 2d image only seen with left eye | 3-d image | odd blinking 2d image only seen with right eye.

If you get good at this stuff(I consider myself good at the crosseyed variant used here as I can look at any of these at a glance) you tend to see what you are doing wrong and adjust the tilt of your head and your cross-eyedness until the images overlap.

Simple high contrast repeating patterns are perhaps easier to practise with as the left and right eye images will overlap at several different 'steps'. I'll include one here. This image when 'viewed in 3-d' will look like a flat plane facing you that is slightly off the monitor, this is not fun of course but it illustrates the point and should be easier to view.

It can be done with real objects too if you have to identical objects side by side oriented and lit the same. The result here is less than spectacular as you will see the same object and in 3-d at some altered distance away from you, big whoop !

Indeed. If you don't demand a nice uniform legth scale(distant objects might appear more 3 dimensional than they are as you are rotating, say an onos, around it's center in hlmv not around a distant point, things might appear flatter than they should be or deeper than they should etc.) in which case you would have to use some program that allows considerably more controll. It does however do a descent job of fooling the brain and it is fun.
