Something to do while waiting for ns
Greetings all.

After every semester or so I usually treat myself to a new game purchase. Well, it's been a while (the last few have been Sims purchases for my girlfriend :/) and I'm not sure what to get. I've been trying a few demos like JKII and Dungeon Siege and they're ok but they haven't really convinced me to purchase the full version. I've never tried any of the Warcraft games but I'm not sure if I'm a real big RTS fan (although I did like Alpha Centauri). The preview of UT2003 in CGW has me pretty geeked but it doesn't come out for at least another month.

So how about some suggestions and or reviews of whatever it is you're playing while waiting for NS to show up.

No One Lives Forever. I don't care how old it is. It is the single best game ever made. Other good ones: Starsiege:Tribes, Jedi Knight II, and Civilization (if you liked Alpha Centauri).

of course Alpha Centauri is TBS, not RTS.

hehehe in my country u can buy all the games really cheap.... coz there isnt any legal control on the quality of the cds so u can just go and buy copies of a game and not the original one.......anyways i always buy copies, but i buy original ones sometimes when i think they are good..... ie: warcraft3,hl,ut, redalert2 and all those cool games.....

well i think that if u like fps, u should wait for ut.... but if u like rts ones u could just go and buy warcraft3, if u like rpgs u could buy nwn (it ownz) or u could buy DS but i dont like it that much......

WAREZ=BAD BATTOUSI!

Starsiege=Tribes and Tribes 2 are both fantastic games. I wouldn't go for WC3, i personally have started to lose intrest in it, but if you're an avid RTS'er, go and get it!

Jedi Outcast is good, I personally don't like the latest patch, but it's good for a month or two of sustained, constant gaming.

Also, on the free side of things, http://firearmsmod.com is a pretty cool mod, takes some getting used to, but it's the only thing keeping me sane till NS comes out.

Morrowind is pretty good, if you arent up for the hack n' slashiness of the Dungeon Siege and NWN, and if your computer can handle it...

well i am waiting for neocron, i think it will costm oney every month im not sure.. it will be a mmorpg with guns and armor and u control the guns aim, not like automaticly attacks you control it and its recoil

Morrowind, WarCraft 3, and CIV 3 are all very good games imo.

Well, lessee...

Morrowind is, and I know I'll get flamed for this, in a way a lot more hack&slahy than NWN - if you're a fighter, you pretty much only get near an enemy and leftclick pretty fast. I don't say it's bad, I had a blast of a time with it, but keep this in mind.

Neverwinter starts weak, but gets damn strong after 50% of the first chapter. Definetely a great game!

Keep your fingers away from Dungeon Siege. Really, not even a conservative should be treated to this.

If you liked Alpha Centauri (Forget game - this piece of code was art!), Civ3 is somewhat of a mandatory, but I don't think it's as good as AC.

Never played WC3 ... yet.

Warcraft III. Best game of the year, and if you don't like RTS games there's a LOT of rpg ish elements to the single player story, its VERY enjoyable.

Grand Theft Auto 3.

Jedi Knight II.

I also second the motion towards NOLF. Its great despite its major disadvantages (Lithtech).

these are all good :)

p.s. Neverwinter Nights is the same crap as baulder's gate, just 3D instead of 2D. I played it for 30 minutes and was sick of it the whole time.

If you haven't played Deus Ex, try to snag a copy of that. Probably one of the best games I've ever played. You can find it for cheap and it doesn't look too bad (but pales in comparison to games like JKII for example) Its a great game though, keep you occupied for a LONG time.

well dont get wc3 if its 60$ its not worth 60$ but then a gin you might like "fast" games i beat the sp in like 3 4-6 hour sittings and bnet games take 10 mins so. i like the slower rts games like TA.

I tend to see my self playing JK2 most of the time ...
I only play on one server though, its FFA and has a no saber = no attack policy. Its a rare breed, but in my opinion makes the game 500% better ...
Gives people a chance to put their saber away and hang out, talk with other people - what ever they want. Theres usualy always large brawls going on too, so there almost never a point where you cant fight anyone ..

eh - enough of JK2 though ..

Americas Army is good, once you get past all the 'omg - its propaganda ... blah blah blah blah'. Doesnt change the fact its still a very well made (free) game.

WC3 is pretty good.

I love NWN. Love it.

eh, thats all I really play ...

JK2 is really fun expecially with the duel mode thing in the internet games, NWN is too confusing for me, i played it for about 3 hours and i got lost...theres just so much u can do......i guess i just dont have a long enuf attention spand to play it and my computer doesnt work for it so i had to paly on my bros. but i dont know if it gets better i didnt get out of the city. Dungeon seige i liked a lot i had fun with it the only thing i have against it is, what happens after u beat it.........i beat the game on all dificulties and then beat it on a LAN with my bro then played the multiplayer map.....all too easy. but its sometimes fun to play once in a while.WC3 is fun i liked how your heroes could get items and upgrade in lvls the story was pretty cool im on the night elfs right now.
I didnt like civilization 3 that much...maybe its just me.
another fun game i got was Operation Flashpoint (FPS) its a cold war game where u can be the NATO forces or if u get the expansion pack u can be russian, it was pretty fun and it had some hard parts. u can fly helicopters, airplanes, drive some tanks and more things, good game.

If you are looking for a MP FPS, America's Army is the way to go, it's very good, very polished and best of all, free. There are a few bugs that will probably be ferreted out in the next wave of patches as per usual. I am indifferent towards WAR3, nothing really special as far as I can see. DS is a load of crap IMHO, you stand there and you little dudes shoot stuff automatically, whoop-de-friggin-do. Tribes 2 is a mighty fine game if you completely ignore the auto-update feature and download the patches manually.

What have people got against the Lithtech engine anyway? It gave me AvP2, I can forgive it for anything but I didn't see anything wrong with it at all.

Oh, yeah, if you dont have UT, get that, if you shop around you can find it for 5 bucks.

But yeah, Theif 1, 2, and Deus ex will probably yeild a month of solid gaming, and will cost you, probably, a grand total of 30 bucks.
• GencideGencide Join Date: 2002-05-30 Member: 698Members
Yeah, forgot to mention Theif. I think you can get it for like 10 bucks and its a damn fine peice of gaming goodness.

The last game that impressed me enough to finish the SP campaign was Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis. It has a unique feeling, something that really immerses you in these combined arms operations. An add-on (Resistance) has just been released for it, so there might be bundle versions soon.

I got bored by Warcraft 3 real quickly. Dunno why, but it felt like Yet-Another-Standard-RTS.

Here's what I find myself playing on my computer:
JK II
Soldier of Fortune 2
Freedom Force
Global Operations
AvP 2
Operation Flashpoint
As far as the America's Army game goes, I'm already in the Army, so why would I want to play a game that tries to simulate what I do for a living?

A quick note about JK2: While saberfights are extremely addicting in multiplayer mode, I'd not advise anyone to buy the game for the singleplayer.
I've seldom seen a bigger collection of trial&error puzzles.

lol, yea ...

I honestly had no reasons for buying JK2 save for the MP ...

I loved the way JK played on the little LAN we set up at my old high school and I knew if the gameplay was anything close to the original - I'd love it.

The SP side of JK2 is quite lacking to tell ya the truth ...

I doesn't even become fun untill you get your saber and force powers. Thats like ... 4 levels or so into the game ...

I was playing the first few levels and just kept feeling like 'Weeeeee this is fun ..... [/sarcasm]'.

However, once you get the force + saber, the game picks up a bit. But yes, many many puzzles ...

I don't know JK2, but I've played and liked JK1. Especially the single player part. Perhaps we can recommend that instead?

My computer tends to show signs of strain at anything less than a few months old, so...

I'd recommend Ground Control. That's great fun (and it looks prety good too). You can get it on budget now, too. Best strategy game I've ever played.

I'm not overtly thrilled with RTS games. I'm more of the FPS type.
