<div class="IPBDescription">A question or 2.</div> I have descoverd that linux can be installed on a windows PC as a duel boot. So i was planning to use Partition magic to split my C drive in 2 and have 1 half running windows 2k and the other running linux. Then, using PQboot to switch between the 2 OS's. But i also have a drive J which has lots of MP3's on it, but its an NTFS file system, so will linux be able to read of it? Also what file system does linux use?

Thanks

I try to answer the questions.

Linux has a inbuilt partition thing. with that you can change the partition at installation (no need of partition magic).
Then, linux has LILO. A boot loader from wich you can select windows, no need of PQboot.

And last. Linux cannot write to NTFS (i heard the newest version can, a linux pro could help here) but linux has no problem to read NTFS.

    I hope i could help

Aslong as it can read, thats all i need.

The idea is that my collage has bloacked all MP3 and radio station sites. And so the idea is to set up and apache server and a script that nsradio DJ TYDEL mentiond which generates a HTML file with all files in a directory and then a button to play them. Anywho, thats the idea. And as far is i think its not illegal because its not distribution it just playingthem over distance. Exactly like taking a cd to collage, but this way not having to.

I also want the linux as a test bed for websites that i make.

ok so you wanna try out linux, the best way to do this is to download <a href='http://www.knoppix.net/' target='_blank'>Knoppix</a>. its a self contained linux distro on a cd i think that will allow you to run linux from your cd rom w/out making a harddrive install, perfect for trying out linux. next you may want to check out the<a href='http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/' target='_blank'>Mandrake</a> distro: its a great newbie linux distro that has an option to install in your windows partition so that you wont have to repartition your drive. If you really want to re-partition your drive chances are you'll lose everything on the drive, so you may want to check out those options instead if your just looking to check it out.

Repartitioning wont mean i loose everything on that drive. Partition magic allows you to throw in partitions where ever you like if you have the space, without loosing a thing.

Anyway. I have hit the 3 download buttons for redhat allready.
I have a total of around 1600mb to download, should be ready by tomorrow morning, YEY.

just remember that partition magic isnt god and everything on that drive might not be fine...just know that repartitioning may not go the way you hope.

Depeding on Distro you get LILO or GRUB. Btw a batch file toasted one of my hard-drives. Good job partition magic. If you want to learn Linux get mandrake 9.1 If you want a hastle free self-contained get Knoppix(german made) Or Gentoo(American?) Both come on CD and are self sufficient. No nuking of hard-drives. Just your patience....if your a linoob.

Fair enough. If it kills my HDD it no great problem. Win2k needs a nice reformat anyway.

Mandrake, Knoppix and Redhat are good "beginner" Linux distros.

Although I like Redhat and Debian, once you go Slackware you never go back. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Meaning what. Because redhat has a nice GUI it has lost things in return. What do you mean about slackware?

Same. It botched the format and burnt out the drive.

Slackware is the most simplistic Linux distro I've ever used. It's just so elegant that things require a lot less effort, even if it takes a little longer.
