<div class="IPBDescription">yeah i was bored :D</div> Since I had nothing to do and didnt slept for the night, I read that other post trying to find out how many constellation player there is.
Then ive been thinking how the hell servers know the constellation members ? <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> this couldnt been hardcoded since the list must grow and new constellation members can be added. So this list must be received when the server is going up. And also, there isnt only constellation members, there is also developpers, veterans, betaop and a group called "pt" (maybe for playtester? )
I've had a lot of question on how HLDS is operating with WON to get updated on the master list ... so this was the perfect time to try this:
I found a little opensource utility to sniff my network:
www.packetyzer.com
really good little app. Its instinctive and powerful.
With this app I could see what is transfered over the network.
I then began capturing on packetyzer, started an HLDS server and, among other things, I could see all the dev, playtester, betaop, vet, const with all their wonids <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo--> . I was surprised it wasnt encrypted at all. Maybe for the next version they should make this encrypted. Or maybe the dont care at all...
Anyway, after that all i had to do is copy the clipboard from packetyzer and make a txt file. Then I wrote a little C program in about 5 mins to find the number of occurence of a word from a txt file . I did this for dev,pt,vet, betaop, const.
Here are the results:
dev: 10
pt: 80
vet: 140
betaop: 13
const: 292
so there is 292 constellation members <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> not far from the 300 some of you predicted <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
That post is just to share you my discoveries, nothing more <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

well, seriously I could make hax/exploit and such, I just dont see the point to it. I know I could do it, and if I could do lots of ppl will hate me

well that depend... some things are easier to do than other .. but given time and patience yes I could make anything(well anything that is client side since most server side exploits are found quite fast), tho it would be lame.. I mean the game is fun as it is .. remember what I did up there was at 6 in the morning I didnt slept it took me about 1 hour to do that ... I got lucky it wasnt encrypted. if it was I wouldnt be able to do anything at this point. I would need to look over the net for the most popular encryption methods and see if one could fit there. Or looking at the part of code that decrypts the message with a asm debugger or such.
I dont want to brag or anything ... but some people thinks that "hacks" is a "mysterious" thing only for "elite" can do. Yeah right ... That's not true, anyone can learn how to "hack" (hell i hate that word) given time and patience <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> and a lot of google sometimes <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
and at this point I dont even know why im talking about this <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

And on subject: I thought there were much much more constellation members than that <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
Edit- Why I do the sudden image of a Fade going, "With your donation, NS can continue it's fine tradition of good gaming?"
Why does this remind me of the picture of you in your Santa hat?
