Network hardware maker Netgear has warned its customers of a flaw in some of its router products that could set off an "accidental" denial-of-service attack.
Netgear router models RP614, RP614v2, DG814, MR814 and HR314 are affected by the flaw. Anyone using one of these models should upgrade their firmware with an appropriate patch from the Netgear Web site.

Ive heard of them before on a few news sites...
a huge news website called slashdot does this every day by posting links to small servers <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
DDOS are also often caused by viruses; imagine if the blaster worm didnt shut down your comptuer but instead said that at a certain time on a certain day you would open up www.microsoft.com in your browser fifteen times per minute. 15x100,000,000 computers is enough to kill off MS's website for the day (and this makes the virus writer very very happy i assume).
BACK ON TOPIC, i read somewhere that netgear routers all accidentally are supposed to view the university of wisconsin madison's time server to synchronize their internal clocks. well, netgear sold a few million of these poorly programmed routers, and UWM is getting rather upset at being pounded with requests.
/me shakes fist at hippycrites!
/me chucks his NetGear router out the window.

Cuase netgear is a cheap pice of crap and no one cares. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
You cant expect a company that cares about the bottom dollar to not cut corners. And I've always said, the only reason people badmouth MS is cause of the $$ that company makes.

Observe this rare phenomenon: If there's no mention of general Hippyness MonsE will delude himself into thinking that there are, in fact, Hippies about. He will then get angry at these illusionary free thinkers in order to demonstrate his dominance over the herd.

Actually, this is wrong. What most DDoS virii do is ping a server thousands of time using the maximum available packet size and fragment it. This hurts a server more than requesting data tons of times.
[EDIT]
Also, script kiddies use this themselves. It's not limited to virii. Sending thousands of fragmented packets at maximum byte size is the standard for DoS and DDoS attacks.

For some reason, I find the idea of open source hardware hilarious.

I think he meant the firmware. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Geek2 PM's: 'darnit, I found a short-circuit in someone's northbridge. Gonna BLOG the shizzle out this clown'
Geek3 PM's: 'Ok, tonight's build of the processor is available for pickup for anyone that wants to drive over here. I'll mirror it in my neighbors house too'
