Fo Sho' cracka!
Hey, I've reformatted my computer probably like 30 times. (no joke). And I was wondering if anyone knew how to make a restore cd so that I wouldn't have to isntall driver after driver, and update OS's constantly. I tried once and it didn't do crap...I want one that can install my OS, and all my drivers. Any ideas?

Don't b0rk your computer and you won't have to format. User errors all around, friend.

A better idea is just to make a CD containing the latest drivers and programs you use.

I don't think you can make a 'restore CD'....

Get a new OS based on the NT system (preferably 2k). Back when I had 98 I had to reformat nearly every 2 months. With XP/2k only every major catastrophe.

If you DO have XP, try using system restore to restore to a previous point. That has to be the BEST damn feature microsoft has ever implemented. Saved me from reformatting at least 20 times.

Ed: Got a lil sidetracked there, and forgot about your post .

You can use the microsoft backup program (Programs - Accessories - System - Backup). I believe it requires you to mark all "backup" files with the "archive" system attribute. Knowing MS, you'd probably be better off with a piece of commercial (or free/shareware) software package.

Does the system restore get rid of files tho? I've read that it only restores system files, ie: drivers and such..

    MS' backup tool works fine.

I don't know what it restores and what it doesn't. I do know it restores desktop, start menu, and some registry.

I don't worry about it. Occassionally I'll have to reinstall programs, but that's better then having to reinstall windows. I don't think it will delete executables, but be careful. For the most part I trust system restore to do just that w/o trouble.

well....thinking about it for alittle while you could do this: use norton ghost it should allow you make a back up of your harddrive on cd/dvd or something then you could just reghost your drive when you want to go back to a perfect fixed install... just an idea

Norton Ghost is probably the best for what you're trying to accomplish. I personally reformat every six months or so to keep my machine clean and optimized.

In that case, I don't even use my Ghost backup, but I do have a CD that contains intallation exes of almost mandatory applications like WinZIP, Trillian, Winamp, Editpad, PuTTY, etc. You can put your drivers on here too without a problem.

ahh yes putty, my favorite program to use when logging into my shell on the clan server. one other thing i do i would suggest you should too, make a few gig partition just for windows and install all your big applications on the rest of the partition. that way all you have to do is remake shortcuts for most things. some things need to be reinstalled. but w/half life all you gotta do is reenter your cd key and you can play again. give that a try
