Ressuracting the dead

A true attempt
This is a true story, the following horrible details really did happen....

I was recalling my first love- compy sigh... 486/33, 32megs of ram... no video card, sat sideways to the usual tower interface... l337 3x CD rom drive, 5.25" floppy... She's the one who introduced me to doom, Dark Forces, Roger Wilco's Space quest adventures, pr0n, shareware that gave you 1/3 of the game, my first "professional" game I created based on the original D&D rules that even worked multi-player for 2 peeps, sigh... those were the days... waaay back my freshman and sohpmore years of highschool...

but then, we got a new computer and donated compy to my school (due to their contract with macintosh, they were in dire need of IBM compatible coimputers to run certain kinds of software for the classes), and then... lo and behold, one of my clan-mates who goes to my old highschool, says that they are giving away an old 486/33 computer and was joking about who would want such a piece of junk...

my compy!!!!!! She's coming back!!!!!!

I woke up at 5 AM and brought the old 5.25" games on floppy out of storage, brought down boxes and boxes of 3.5" disks (this was before CD roms so you'd have 16 disks for one game!!!! ), all in preperation of compy's arrival back home. School's still out so I had to wait until 8am for administration to open up (admin was open at 5AM IIRC when school was in session) Speeding down to the school with blatent disregard for the speedlimit, rushing in there to be the 1st to claim my old computer, and then very gently and carefully driving compy home I could begin to feel that feeling I had when I first discovered computer games that didn't require a TV (like my old- still working- commodore 64).

Getting home I placed compy on her old shrine/desk, turned her on....
and...

the school wiped her beautifully petite 800 meg HD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just an inconvience I say, and place my old win95 CDrom in, start the instalation and... I don't meet the minimum requirements for installation (Grumble.... not fast enough processor... grumble)

So.... help! anyone have a copy of win32 (or was it 3.2?) the windos OS BEFORE windows 95? I REALLY want to play some of my old games and... sniff... I can't find old OSes

NIbbles!!!!!!!!!! where are you?!?!??!?!?!?!?! Roger wilco! I know you'll make it past janitor!!!! just give me time!!!! commander keen! I'll have you blasting slimeballs soon enough! Duke NUkem!!! hang in there!! I can get you through your first 2 episodes with ease! myst old buddy old pal, don't worry you're pristine worlds will be enjoyed again! Gobliiins you goofy trio, trust me when I tell you to eat that mushroom- it'll stop that severed foot from hopping around! just... need... more... time....

wow, my first comp was a 486 66 mhz with 4 MB ram (later upgradeed to 8) but it only had a 230 MB HD.
You can find alot of old OS on abandon ware sites , the OS you're looking for is windows 3.11, tho i recommend using pure dos, check this site for some old dos versions

man, best of luck to you in your noble quest :D

once you get things set up, may I recommend SAM & MAX: HIT THE ROAD. very excellent game. Get the CD-ROM version! It runs under pure dos only though, but hey if you are going the windows 3.1 route you'll have dos anyway ;)

That'll be windows 3.11 you'll be wanting, lemme see, I should have it somewhere, it's 3 floppies for MSDOS, then 6 floppies for windows 3.11. And I'd say it was abadonware by now.

I'll have to check they are still intact
Oh, and as for games try "legend" which is about right for that PC, and of course the lemmings games.

Good luck finding drivers for your mouse/keyboard, vga, anythign else that it needs.

You can get every kind of DOS ever from BootDisk.com. It's legal. You could also use this oppotunity to play around with Linux. You really have no reason to load Win3.11/WfWG, as it was merely a shell over DOS anyway, and will only suck resources.

Yeah, hell, if I could get my old PC back from the dead (I wish I hadn't let my dad can it now, he chucked it after it stopped being able to boot , of course I now know a lot more about hardware than I used to, so I could probably get it back now D: ) then I'd jump at the opprtunity for a "safe" environment to fiddle about with linux and learn it.

And yeah, it was a shell, but it was a damn nice shell I know certainly I wouldn't have got into computers at such a small age if it weren't for win3.11 simply because my dad wouldn't have trusted me with DOS. The worst thing I ever did in windows was reassociate .BAS files trying to get gorillas to work, or rather trying to fiddle about with gorillas.

I still remember how I felt when I worked out how to add icons to the program groups, what exactly associations meant and did, and when I found out how to change the background. Now all these things are just handed to the user, everything is too easy in windows9x, people don't appreciate operating systems anymore, they are zombies not gorging on blood but "ease of use" which gets ladled to them from AOL and WindowsME.

Command lines don't even mean anything to most ppl anymore.

Oh oh oh Legend RULES!! I seriously played that game to death, it was so much fun. Slash slash, bang, crack, <poof as enemy explodes and drops a ring of speed>.

Shame I can't play it anymore as my floppy disks are corrupted.

I got my start in DOS\Win 3.1, I still like command line interfaces for certain things, even if the most useful thing i can with it is ping stuff.

If you get into consulting with large scale computer implementations (tens of thousands of PC's and servers), you will find that command-line computing is still very much in use. It's the easiest to manipulate for large scale work, it's much faster, and works better as components of other systems. Learning DOS-based computing now is a good learning experience for becoming an engineer later

ahh... reminds me of my 95MHz (clocked from 75) cost nearly 4000 back in those days... So expensive that I hadnt got anything new but a voodoo2 till quake2 came out. (Luckily the minimum system requirements where the exact ones of my computer! ) and it had all the latest hardware, like a 2X cd-rom, 16 megs of ram, 1,2Gb hdd...
I used to play Stunt Drive... Ah, and Duke3d... still love it! Especially episode 2... And really fun to map for...

Bah! Now Im blabbering to much without any real point... Now if youll excuse me, I have to get rid of some mosquitos (did I spell that right?) thats really bothering me...

Did you go to the provided Bootdisk.com link? It has everything you need, including drivers
