<div class="IPBDescription">getting annoying</div> recently I've been getting these lag spikes while i play ns, they happen once every minute or so, my choke will rise to 5-20, then lower back down to 0 a few seconds later.

This is really annoying and I cant play, what can be the problem?

I have a cable connection and im using a router.

check to see if your modem is ok. If its ok, then run a virus scanner, a good one. Next try ad aware and spybot search and destroy. Then see if youre o/s is updated.

Verify your router settings, try forwarding ports 27015 -27020 directly to your computer..
It could be your router decideing where to send the packets.
    Try a different server too

Have u tryed running an Ad-Ware scan?

Many spyware programs use the net and can cause lag spikes on regular intervals.

also contact your ISP, often that is the fix for wierd performance.

If you need to forward ports, you need a router,
If you have a linksys BEFSR41, (Etherfast cable/dsl router) I can tell you how, just search the forum for BEFSR41
