Siege and Pirates
Seems like all the people with interesting BF42 mod ideas saved them up for releasing all in one weekend - gg to true mod authoring.

In this corner, we have Siege, a medieval mod with capapults, ballista, siege towers and more. Pretty fun looking, gonna try it out tonight.

In this corner, we have Pirates, with sailing ships, cannons, seaside forts, boarding parties and hand-to-hand duels. Looks pretty silly and fun too. Fire a broadside into his waterline, ya scalliwags!

If you add in the already-mentioned BF82 post-apocylyptic carwars racing combat, and you have 3 mods that take a boring game with good vehicle code and use it for something interesting and imaginative. This is what mod-making is all about - taking cowardly game publishing execs and smashing their faces in with kickass inspiration. Punk rock!

Wow :O Since when has MonsE turned into a BF pimp Last time I checked, he was ridiculing us who bought it and cursing the names of our families.

I think I just might check these out...of course there still is Desert Combat to worry about. I installed it weeks ago and still havn't cared enough to play it. I would say that the Pirates mod looks interesting.

    Download-ho!

I dislike BF42 the game - I have few qualms with the game engine though. As for DC - it's not my cup of tea. This may be due to Dice and EA's ridiculous policies on mod making (they seem to only want to encourage people buying crappy expansion packs), but regardless... I like the gamecode, not the gameplay.

These guys above seem to have actually tried to come up with something fresh though. I can't wait to try them out tonight.

DC sucks. Also because it's in the alpha version :\

Yeah - manning a ship in the middle of an ocean seems to me that it could abolish some of the "I want my own plane!1!"-mentality that seems to be prevalent in the minds of most BF players. Being just a small cog in a giant whole (I.E. a cannoneeer on a ship - you have no real job other than to shoot. The driving and deckfighting are left completely to other players.

Of course, this leads to the mod's pitfall - if intelligent,, mature teamplayers do not actually plaay this mod, the actual team-on-a-boat vision can never be realized.

I'm also quite anxious to play this mod

Holy crap. These mods look so sweet. I never liked vanilla BF1942, based on the demo, but these mods are making me think it may be worth picking up. Hmm.

What do you guys think? Shall i get BF1942 for the mods?

I'll give a full report on my findings tomorrow

    And we're back!

I didn't get to play siege, but Pirates was MAD fun. Great action, inherent teamwork due to the ships being sorta useless without crews working together, fun gun battles. The maps are pretty decent too. There were some niggling issues of occasional lag and some of the limitations of the BF42 engine for modding, but overall I was very pleased. Gonna try siege when I get home, and maybe find a few more deathrace map servers for I82.

Overall, any one of these mods is 100x more imaginative and interesting than BF42 or Desert Combat. I recommend trying them all out.

Yay! MonsE is being positive today! Huzzah!

I think I'll trey Pirates now, since you gave it such a good prognosis

I haven't tried the new version yet, but the last version of Battlefield Pirates was a blast even though it was pretty rough around the edges.

From chatting with the veteran players in a couple games, they seemed to think this was a vast improvement. Knowing how hard it is to get players to accept change in a mod, it must have truly improved for the best.

Remember to correct your position in the looping if you're about to fly out

Yeah, too many times have I stayed on-route but stopped, when I was right on my head... Boosters only accelerated the downfall...
