wow,

KA-50/52 Hokum, nice find...

to me, thats the Russian equivalent of an AH-64 Apache.......

Loving the amount of missiles/rockets its got mounted tho....

(And no, i didnt have to look that up..... i like the Enemy Engaged games, says it all really)

I don't know anything about choppers really but I guess it has two rotors rotating in opposite directions so it doesn't need a back rotor to keep it steady. Coo'

Yea, thats the basic way it works..... Makes it look real wierd tho,

Also, it has ejector seats.. blows the top rotor off, then the bottom, then bang, up go the pilot and co-pilot..

pretty cool if you ask me

Yes very Shark like.....it reminds me of that shark spieces that fly round with minguns, rockets and two propellers, oh wait no such thing, doesn't look like a shark, looks more like a hellycopter

I'd like to know why there was a problem with using the rear propeller instead of having two lumped together on the top. I mean, if it's not broken, don't fix it...

Yeah, there's a bunch of dual-rotor russian designs, if I recall correctly. Pretty spiffy stuff, especially the eject mechanism.

If you ejected out of that surely you would get sliced to pieces.

I think the second rotor spins the other way, not sure why, I THINK it's to reduce noise, or make a smaller radar signature... uhh I dunno. Something.
• Dirty_Harry_PotterDirty_Harry_Potter Join Date: 2002-11-21 Member: 9500Members
its to ensure the chopper dont rotate "with" the rotorblade - thats why normal 1 rotored choppers got the Small Vertical Rotor

if it has some extra advantages over 1 Rotored Choppers i do not know.
• RPG_JssmfulhudRPG_Jssmfulhud Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4006Members
Yeah. Stupid people taht wander around a landed chopper don't get sliced by the rear propeller...

Anyway, that is correct. The rear rotor is used to maintain heading and eventually, to stop the chopper from starting to circle around its axis. The main rotor produces a force which pushes the chopper in the direction of the turning propeller. The pilots mainly use the rear propeller to change heading by pushing the left or right pedal with their legs, which in turn changes the back rotor's speed. And you can imagine the horror of the back rotor falling off (yes, it happened here...) but luckily, no one got hurt...

What if the propellers don't come off?

You mean the double rotors by the russian chopper, by catapulting?

That's an interesting philosophical difference between Soviet (now Russian) and American helicopter designers. There are a number of Soviet-era designs that used counter-rotating rotors to do away with the rear rotor. Especially on naval helos where space is a premium. Also, the rear rotor is where most noise comes from in a helicopter - removing it lowers the sound signature, which gives you a bit of an advantage in surprise (key for an attack helo).

Other approaches have been to use vectored exhaust. And in upcoming US designs like the 'stealthy' Commanche, they keep the rear rotor but redesigned it for low noise and high performance with composite materials, which theoretically gets rid of the complexity and lower manueverability of the counter-rotating blades and the high noise output of a regular rear rotor.

That concludes MonsE's boring helicopter lecture for the day...

Ive got a 1:72 scale model of a similar type, the kamov-ka 50 (I think that IS the k50')

Double propellars give more lift, wich means -> m0R3 W34p0n5!!!!!

I love helicopters!! The way they move is so cool, makes me 1 wid the universe. The russians made some very strange and HUGE helicopters + some rather insane seaplanes.

Go to the bottom of this document, there's some info there

Heh heh - the usual feelings of Russian overcompensation due to feelings of inadequacy ("completely outclasses in accuracy ... the one being developed for the reconnaissance and ground-attack gunship COMANCHE "). They are like the original fanboys - impossible for them to like anything they didn't make.

If you would like some less rabid and more factual info on the Hokum, here is a link. It's interesting that they decided to go with a single pilot rather than the typically more effective tandem pilot and gunner combination favored since the 1960's, especially considering that Russian avionics are often not as advanced (although this one uses French-made avionics in several variants).

"gary? GARY!!"

"it didn't WORK!!!"

"..."

"..."

"crap..!!"

on a side note, yes, that is a fuggleness helicopter.

Atleast they've put ejection systems in, so they dont lose the pilots if the heli's go down, unlike the rest of the world, who would just as soon lose a pilot aswell as the helicopter....
