"Oh? you want a peice, eh?" *Ed thnrows a switch on the console, a bubble appears around Ed's ship, electricity seems to crackle around the bubble as it solidifies, Ed's ship seems to be partially transparent* "Transphasic field, holding. It's time to blow this scene, get everybody and their stuff together. Ok, 3, 2, 1, LET's JAM!" *Ed slams on the accelerator, the ship takes off like a bat out of hell, far faster then anyone expected.*

Well, more explaination time. By having a stable transphasic field at a lower setting then required to phase the whole ship out, Ed effectively pushes a percentage of the total mass of the Ferrin outside of "normal" space. And since the engines are pushing a reduced weight, speed, manuvering and load capacity are increased. Normally, the speed factor is negated by the increased loads Ed normally carries, but since this is in a real-to-life simulator, Ed is going out with an empty cargo bay.

"That's why you don't lose your concentration. In terms of space flight, the most minor course or velocity errors can mean the difference between you making it back to Port Control, or you becoming a nice splat mark on some planetoid in the a**-end of nowhere.

Wanna know how i did that? as you know, the transphasic generator shifts mass outside of normal space. Also, my ship has several similer systems to allow for 'solar surfing' in a stars atmosphere. The net effect is that when his generators on i can set my sytems out of phase with his, so we pass right through each other, even if he's not quite phased out (my ship never actually can phase out).

They don't produce solar flares. Which is why Dea's ship is going to have trouble getting out - it was (i think, anyway) designed to ride a solar flare out of the sun's corona.
