The Attitude Of Some People

With regards to Constellation
Playing a few days ago I hopped onto my regular server to find that they'd finally enabled Constellation/dev/pt/veteran icons. Yay! Anyways I was playing as usual when I started to get bombarded with questions about the little blue thing next to my name. A few binds later and I was answering questions with the flick of a key, and whilst most people said variations of "cool" "nice work", a few were downright nasty. They said that I had been ripped off, that NS wasn't worth a dime, and when I told them that the developers needed every penny they could scrounge they laughed at me and said they were "taking me for a ride" so to speak, and that the whole Constellation program was a scam to get money from players.

To anyone out there who thinks such things, how dare you. You are playing a game for free, one that is argueably better than most games on the retail market. You are playing a game in which Flayra and the developers have invested thousands of dollars into. I asked about the voices in NS a while back, and I found out that Flayra spent ten thousand dollars on professional voice acters and studios. To even think that people who would do such things for us are out to scam a quick buck is unexcusable.

If any moderators on servers ever see people making such comments, I don't think it would be unresonable to ban them. If they think that Flayra, Max, Monse and everyone else who contributed to this fantastic game were just out to scam us then they don't deserve to play the game.

These comments are not directed at the bulk of the community naturally. It may be that what I saw was a freak incident. Nevertheless I found it appaling that anyone could make such a statement whilst playing a game for free.

If they think so they shouldn't be playing in the first place

Constellation is a fund to help develop the game even further,if it weren't for it then 2.0 wouldnt be released at this time,or even at all.You would have to be happy to have played a game for free, you only donate IF YOU WANT TO.The NS team is not forcing you to pay to play.

Exactly. I didn't have to donate, but by god I think NS is worth at least as much as any other retail game out there. So I chose to give something to help alleviate the vast funds the devs expended making this game. For people to see that as me being sucked in by some sort of scam makes me angry. Real angry

Something that is entirely voluntary can't be ripping you off by definition....

If not there's alot of rip-off charities!

Damn that oxfam donation, they ripped me off! I put money in the donation box I what did I get? Not even a sign next to my name!

Blegh. Just understand that they are a self-serving individual. Understanding and having the will to give puts you leagues above such individuals. At least, in regards to respect.

To me, the actual cost per hour of NS is now somewhere between a dime and a cent and still falling ... pretty cheap for this good an entertainment, I'd say...

I think I saw a few of those comments ryo.

It all boils down to a bad attitude in general. Next time they say something like that simply ask them if they paid any money and if they say no then ask them what they are bitching about. You donated, as a token of appreciation, the devs enabled an icon near your name.

It's a combination of contempt, jealousy and all around bad attitude. Dont concern yourself with such individuals

I know what your talking about, I have also had run ins with these jerks.
Saying things like
"Ignor that Constellation guy hes just a sucker!"
and other crap.
Its not needed or welcomed.
Most ppl are happy to see constellation members on the server playing.
Its the ignorate types who don't know any better!
Some ppl can't undersrtand exactly how important the donation are to Charlie!

Help Keep NS alive, Donate!
You can play for free, but why not show that you would buy this game if it wasn't!

Yeah, thankfully I haven't come across this yet. A few folks have asked what the symbol means, and most have replied with "oh" or "that's cool". Constellation isn't a way of sucking up to the devs.. there are no secret powers. It's just a way to appreciate the project in ways other than "best mod EVAR!"

I'll admit, I look at people who have donated abit differently than ordinary people in a good way

constallation is also fot those of you that feel that they should pay something for the game. Not nessesarily to support the developers, but to pay out.

I've been really discouraged with people's attitudes in general, I almost bound "grumpiness, another unfortunate side effect of hunger," just because I've typed it so many times, why such bad attitudes guys? As for nagging on Constellation members, I am just utterly shocked , that's such crap! Yeah, I've gotten a few of the "Sucker" comments directed towards me, but then, I haven't been giving the best explanation of my icon. "I gave Flayra $20" kinda sounds like it was a bribe to get an icon, rather than a donation to make sure NS keeps being made... I need a better thing to tell people when they ask what my icon means.

Ryo, what bind do you use?
• Robert_PaulsonRobert_Paulson Join Date: 2003-07-29 Member: 18543Members
bind x "I donated money to the development of this game, so please bow down and kiss my arse, or I will ban you from all of NS by calling Flayra personally and have him remove your WON from the NS play list!"

...er maybe not...something a bit better!

bind x "I donated money to the NS team for continued development of this game. It was worth every penny!"

Of course your own personalized message would probably be better

I have 2 binds, one on "o" and one on "p". I fire them off one after another:

o: "The icon next to my name is a Constellation icon. I means I donated money to the NS development team"
p: "Find out more at www.natural-selection.org"

I find that it generally gets the job done: people want to know what the icon is. I put the second bind in because anything I can do to help the devs get some more support I believe is good. Already a few people I've spoken to in game have expressed interest in donating some funds. I do get asked a lot about the amount I donated. Personally I don't think it matters: the fact that you gave is what's important. I mean I don't say to someone who donates to Oxfam: hey how much did you give? Hence I try to ignore such requests

I ran into one of those people once. I wasn't defending myself, but someone else (I intend to donate a quick 20$ when the money comes), but someone else, and he said things like, "you have been ripped off" and stuff. Yeah sure, it's a free game, for THEM, how much have the dev team spent on this stuff?

Under six cents and hour and dropping steadily. I might have to go donate again.

Yeah, I've encountered some of the Constellation-haters myself. Needless to say, if I see people dissing Constellation and/or the NS team on my server, they will be admin_llama'd without warning.

More likely they are disgruntled at the balance or are new to 2.0 and just plain dislike the mod.

I agree that its kind of you guys to donate, and I would to if I werent starting college....If i get some extra money I will to. On the other hand Ive seen some constellation people thinking that little icon is a right of respect. Some, meaning the two ive seen doing it, demanded special treatment and that they were better because of it. I don't like that either.

Most internet flamers need a good boot in the ****. They insult others because they know no harm will come to them and that they can boost their egoes at the expense of others. People like this really -do- need some physical punishment.

Can't say I've seen that, but I can understand how it could come about. I don't brag about the icon or boast or even act like a llama with my defense being "I paid for the game". But I am proud to show my support for the NS team. If I ever see such people abusing their Constellation icon I'll certainly have a few words with them. Thankfully it's something I havn't encountered yet.

most the people who say that the constellation is a waste of money are probably playing through CS retail.
if i could be botherd to sort out PayPal i'd give a donation, this game is by far one of the best mods i've ever seen on the HL engine, as i'm sure many will agree.
