Um.. Relsan, you fail to realize that that is just how vents are.
When someone builds a building, do you really think they care about how the inside of the vents look? Let alone how easily it is for a being to get from one area to another? No. They do it the most efficent way they can. Nancy seems to recreate this quite well.

Now THAT is a good use for /kill.

ANeM: How often do vents in real life have openings that you can crawl into? Usually there is a cover on them, and even with skulk teeth it would take several seconds to break it off. It is a game, and the vents should be made convenient for doing whatever they are meant for (getting from place A to B, etc).

Dang man I wasn't even the one who decided to update them, I was just agreeing with the decision. Besides I was talking exactly like you a few pages ago, but I came to realize that there's a lot of ways to make vents and they don't have to be plain and long and boring. I'm willing to reason that in the future ventilation systems might be a little more intuitive than the way they are designed now in the 21st century.

Actually, not quite. The Nancy vents (when looked at in entirety) contained a number of nonsensical turns, and width-changes. In an actual building, they start out large at the 'hub' which is assumed to be where the air intake (or processing unit in this case) sits. They branch and get smaller as they near the endpoints, as each 'arm' branches off the trunk vent. Expect this type of logic in the new Nancy vents.

Additionally, in large complexes the insides of vents (some of which double as access crawlways) are quite well marked.. especially with 'DANGER' signs in appropriate spots, 'EXIT ->' templates with locational information, and so on. I'm not sure if this will be going in, as the ventways I'd seen were still in the dynamics testing phase.

The 'cleaned up' vents are going to have mostly lighting changes to mark position, 'red emergency' lighting in deeper-in areas, some kind of 'colouration' near various exits, etc. No real signage though, especially not with the newly-crippling 300-entity limit. =-.-=

Also, I'm going to 'break up' the one over-long vent you saw previously with an actual 'hub' mini-room. Still too small for an Onos to evolve anywhere inside, so very cramped-feeling, but large enough to stand and walk around in, and Gorges to build in if they want to burn res, but without being able to block it off.

Basically, a small air filtering room with some 'filter' grates surrounding a fan-like construction in the middle of said room. Nothing fancy, but a definate 'hub' for the whole vent network. Figure 8-10 chambers will fit inside, maybe 10-12 if you're unit-perfect with placement, but they'll just form a 'floor' you can walk around on, not actually blocking the vents off. No Marine building, either. =^.^= The whole room will be like 256x256 overall, so, again, tiny.

Someone said that it would take a skulk a few seconds to break through the cover of a vent. I doubt that tbh. Remember that skulks can rip through marine armour in 1 second. Sorry i know its a pointless post but it annoys me when people say rediculous things.

Working by myself will take a while so I'm looking for help. Please reply if you fall under the following:

-Knows how to map. (actually knows, not just "is willing to learn")
    -Has time to do this
-Won't just make a little and then never be heard from again.
-Is able to remake things almost exactly. (the slightest changes could throw off alignment in the final compiles.)

I'm gonna have people sign up for different parts of the map and everyone goes off and makes their section of the map. When they finish, they send that section in .rmf format to me and I will put it into the main build. Although lighting is nice, don't worry about it. I can fix that up later.

When this is all done I plan on sending the source to DevilDog so we can get this back into ns and updated if he wants it to be.

So anyone who wants to help, just reply and if you have a section of the map you want to work on specify that. After a few posts I will start assigning sections. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
I'll help you m8. Nancy was one of my clanmates favourites, I'd be glad to get it back for him, and DevilDog.

-Have been mapping for 3 (almost 4) years
-Has plenty of time to do this, I am however self-employed and may be required to take in a computer during discussion <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
-When I put my mind to something (which is common when mapping), I'll give it my 100% and nothing less.
-Given a texture alignment here and there, and a small margin of error, I think I could do that, definitly the layout, maybe just not 100% of the tiny details, remember we're trying to re-write a novel after the only copy has been lost.

If you want my help m8 just say.

You could register in the "Dev" forums of my own forums (link to my webby in my sig) we could get to work in there.

It takes a skulk two bites to kill a marine with zero armor (if it was all destroyed and they got health packs). Anything that can't snap through human bones in a single bite is going to take a couple of seconds to bite off the vent cover, especially since the skulk teeth don't point outward and therefore would have a harder time hitting the flat cover of the vent.
  • Vahn_PaktuVahn_Paktu Join Date: 2002-10-28 Member: 1666Members, Constellation
Remember that the skulks legs are spikes. He can use those to rip through it. If the skulk can pick his teeth with them he can do this.

    Guys... four words.

    Natural Selection Isn't Real.

No further discussion on how 'long' it would take to bite through a grate will be appreciated, or tolerated. Take it somewhere else, please. If anything is placed over the main vent network, it will be already-torn-up grates with ragged 'illusionary' edges.

    Status report:

I have finished one of the subrooms from the marine start, and I'm about to move onto the other one that branches to the last of the hallways I have to finish (the one with the airlock that WILL BE FIXED)

I'm guessing a day or so and it should be ready to pass to wolfwings for the final touchups and installation of the vent system. Once a couple of compiles are done, everything'll go back to me for final word (and other final touchups) and then back to wolfwings for a rc1 compile. Then some beta testing on servers. I'm thinking about a public lunixmonster beta test since LB said he wants to be the first to host the map. Not sure on any of that yet. We'll just see what happens.

I will put my server up to the task of testing nancy out.

That is if you are looking for people to host it. I really enjoyed that map and miss it <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

I can also host the final version of it for download (or at least til I run out of bandwidth)!

Unfortunately, I'll have to agree with Lazer on server choices. And also stipulate that we have only one server to test the map with, with steps in place to make sure it doesn't get passed around until RC2 or Final release, whichever happens first.

As for why I like Lunix? *points at Talesin* That's his favorite server, and mine as well after playing on it several times. It's a good server, that I recognize and like, and that I know some Mods and PTs and Vets play on already, so we can get well-informed feedback.
