Are You Using A 2.6 Kernel Yet?

<div class="IPBDescription">Any feedback about the stability ?</div> Hi there,

I hear that the 2.6 kernels are entering the test phase and was wondering if anyone had tried them out yet and if so, (I will assume you have SMP and HyperThreading) hows the performance ?

I also hear there are supposed to be big waves made here. Anyone able to throw me some sugar lumps concerning the future of servers running 2.6 kernels ?

k, check back in about a week. I'm moving to Braintree, MA this weekend ... TTFN

2.6 Incorporated alot of performance patches (Premption, lowlatency, etc). The 2.6 tree will not be maintained by Linus either. Its good... was pretty stable around 2.5.57 i believe

And an added side note for all of you nerds out there (like myself) the 2.6 kernel is ALL NEW code. So SCO's Lawsuite will (keeping fingers crossed) not be able to claim any rights to the new kernel.

It is definitely NOT all new code. It has a lot of new code, but MOST of it is old code and integrated 3rd party patches. MANY drivers weren't changed much at all. Many interfaces were left the same so they didn't need to be.

Besides, who cares about the SCO suit. They're using the Chewbacca defense.

I am personally waiting for my distro to release a build before I upgrade.

I should clarify that it is my understanding that the code in the kernel that SCO is claiming rights to no longer exsist in the 2.6 kernel. So as far as I know the core of the 2.6 kernel was written from the ground up. Not refering to 3rd party and or legacy drivers and such.

If I am wrong than I aplogize, but I have read this in several differnt places.

The tty and framebuffer systems remain untouched. VM was added back into the core as well (after some fixing)

I tried runnign 2.6.0-test3 on my machine.
Stability was good, but hlds seemed to be a bit more jumpy than 2.4.21. Don't know why exactly, but I think I'll stick with 2.4.21 for the time being.

    specs:
    celeron 900 @ 1.1Ghz
    256 mb sdram
    via 686B chipset m/b
    debian 3.0

Alright, thats the stuff I wanted to hear .. someone tried it and others are waiting for the distro patched version.

I'll do the same as the cautious types and wait for a patched up version.

    That reminds me, time to run up2date <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
