Anybody Know Anything About Hard Drives?

Just a basic Western Digital versus Maxtor arguement. I just bought a WD 120gig with 8mb cache and i'm starting to hear that Maxtor is a way better company. I can get the same drive for $120 instead of $150. Should i return WD and get a Maxtor, which brand is generaly better?

I have the Western Digital 120gb 8mb cache. Works pretty damn well. However, I don't run my computer 24/7 like many people and I would suspect that running a computer for so long without ample cooling would cause the hard drive to overheat. Overall, the WD 120gig 8mb cache hdd is great. The 8mb cache really helps in the access times (hard drive works faster, but not spin faster, mind you). I'd get another one if I had a job.

Well, hardware isn't really my thing but I don't think brand names really make much difference, unless you're talking about the CPU itself. A hard disk is a hard disk. It's not going to explode spontaneously because the company that manufactures it isn't a big brand...

After having a maxtor crap out on me i'd stay away from them...


Seagate all the way for me.. newegg has an 8MB cache 7200RPM 120GBseagate for 100 bucks... out of stock though.

Honestly, I'd consider WD and Maxtor to be basically equivalent. They both produce very high-quality equipment, and I've never had any problem with either company's products (and I've dealt with a <i>lot</i> of hard drives over the past few years).

AMD vs Intel is also (usually) close in terms of product quality. I'm a die-hard AMD fan ever since the Athlon came along and smacked Intel around for a while. A few friends of mine are quite the opposite (and worse!) - one will outright refuse to even use a computer that has an AMD processor in it. In other words, it mainly comes down to personal opinion when it comes to buying a processor nowadays.

RAM is a little bit different. There's the generic memory companies which most people will buy RAM from. When you goto computer shows, you do not buy RAM there. A friend of mine said those are very generic and crappy. Always go with some kind of name brand RAM if you don't want it dying on you too soon or something.

On hard drives: I have a WD 200GB HD.....I forgot cache size. However, it lags a lot when I'm copying files....maybe its cuz I'm using win98.

My personal opinion:

Go with Western Digital.

I've had Maxtor drives in the past, and its sad when you have to get into a habit of RMA'ing your hard drive every 3 or 4months due to it suddenly dying. This went on for about 2 years before I just said screw it and bought a WD.

Only reason I got a new WD is cause I ran out of space, but even then I sold it to a friend and it's been wonderful to him, no problems.

So yeah, I trust WD and will never ever ever use another Maxtor drive...
