Have a look through the posts on this forum. It's really as simple as that. The basics have been said in lots of posts...

But I'm feeling generous, so I've done a quick search for a synopsis I wrote in response to an earlier post. Here you go:

    The Object Of The Game:
1: On each map, there are three locations where the aliens can build a hive. Hives spawn new aliens and heal nearby aliens. The aliens start with one hive, at one of these locations.
2: On each map, there is one location where a Command Centre is built. This allows the marines to have a Commander (I'll get to what that is, see below). The commander will build Infantry Portals, which allows reinforcements to arrive.
3: The aim of the game is to destroy the other side's means of getting reinforcements, and kill all the enemy players. So aliens have to destroy all the infantry portals and kill all the marines, and the marines have to destroy all the hives and kill all the aliens.

    Quick rundown of marines:

1: You follow the orders of a Commander, who plays the game like a real time strategy (think Warcraft or Starcraft). You should follow his orders because he can see the whole battle when you can only see one part of it (among other reasons).
2: The commander issues orders by giving you Waypoints, which appear as blue circles on your screen. Some commanders also (or only) give instructions over voicecom or teamchat. Recognise who the commander is, and listen to what he has to say. Remember, a bad plan which everyone follows is better than any plan which nobody follows, and for a while you won't be able to tell the difference .
3: The commander will drop structures for you and your buddies to build, from time to time. Hold down your use key on a structure to build it. It is a good idea to make sure at least one of you is covering the others instead of building, in case you get attacked.
4: Natural Selection is, in part, a strategy game. Like almost all strategy games, it has a resource, aptly named "resources". Resources are collected by building Resource Towers on empty res nozzles. Like all marine buildings, the commander has to drop one on the nozzle and then you build it. RTs draw resources out of the nozzle at a constant rate (think Total Annihilation).
5: The resources belong to the *commander*. The commander is the only one who can spend resources. Res is spent on buildings, upgrades, and equipment.
6: You do not get res for kills. Instead, res gets added to your team's resource pool when you make a kill. Only the commander can spend resources.
7: The only equipment you are able to get for yourself is ammo, which you do by holding down your use key on the armoury (the tubby green building). Note that the more ammo you are carrying the slower you move. Also note that in many situations (ie, when your team is losing) you probably won't have time to squeeze off two clips, let alone 300 rounds. In short, stocking up on full ammo before going anywhere (armoury humping) is a Bad Thing. By the way, all weapons have their own ammo - if you want pistol ammo you have to load your pistol seperately.
8: The supplies you will get most frequently from the commander are medpacks. Be aware that if you aren't in a strategic location or carrying equipment it makes more sense for you to suicide and respawn than have the comm spend resources on medpacks.
9: Other equipment you can be given are jetpacks (JP), heavy armour (HA), heavy machineguns (HMG), shotguns, grenade launchers (GL), mines, or welders. This stuff is *not* all available to the commander at the start of the game. For most of the game you will be without heavy firepower, and will have to rely on your Light Machinegun (LMG) and pistol.
10: DO NOT ASK THE COMMANDER FOR STUFF. He has a million things to concentrate on, so requesting supplies (other than medpacks) will just annoy and distract him from something important. Remember, you are part of a bigger picture. If you do request health, use the right-click menu (because that generates an alert for the commander) or if you use teamchat\voicecom specify where you are. If you do ask for stuff, ask ONCE and then wait. Don't nag.

    Quick rundown of Kharaa (aliens):
1: You are an individual alien. It is not nearly as necessary to travel in groups as it is with marines, but you will find you need to work together with your team against certain targets. Be aware that you are part of a team, and follow the advice from more experienced players. Your most important structure is the hive. Hives allow you to respawn, heal nearby aliens, and allow you to progress up the tech tree. Defend your hives at all cost, because if you lose them you lose the game.
2: You have no single commander. Instead, you have something called hivesight. Hivesight is kinda like a wallhack. Teammates and hive locations appear as white circles on your vision, friendly players or structures under attack are red circles (and will trigger a "life-forms under attack!" or "structure under attack!" or "the hive is under attack!" message). Enemies which a friendly player can see, but you can't, show up as yellow circles. Finally, the skulk's "parasite" attack causes targets to show up on hivesight permanently.
3: Building is done by Gorges, builder class aliens. Gorges are slower than other aliens, and relatively vulnerable. Take note of who your gorges are, and keep them safe. Gorges can heal other aliens with their healspray weapon (which also damages marines).
4: Natural Selection is, in part, a strategy game. Like almost all strategy games, it has a resource, aptly named "resources". Resources are collected by building Resource Chambers on empty res nozzles. Like all alien buildings, a Gorge has to drop an RC on a nozzle. RCs draw resources out of the nozzle at a constant rate (think Total Annihilation).
5: Alien resources are individual. Every alien gets 25 resources at the start of the game. The resources gained by all your team's resource chambers is split up amongst all of the players on your team. You use resources to build buildings (if you're a gorge), evolve to other life-forms (see below), or evolve upgrades. Even though your resources are yours alone, don't be selfish with them - it's common practise for everyone to spend their initial 25 resources by evolving to gorge and building something (usually a resource chamber).
6: You get one to three resources per kill you make (randomly). These are paid directly into your personal resource pool.
7: All alien attacks use energy. Energy regenerates over time.
8: You can heal near hives, and near Defense Chambers. Listen for the pulsing, sloshing sound (you'll soon recognise it, after long enough) which signals that something is being healed.
9: You are able to evolve into other lifeforms (but don't, just yet) and evolve upgrades. You do so using the right-click menu. All evolutions and upgrades cost res, which will be payed out of your personal pool. The alien evolutions are skulk (basic attacker, what you start as), gorge (builder), lerk (flyer, support alien), fade (assassin) and Onos (heavy combat alien). Alien upgrades are classified as Defense, Movement and Sensory. A detailed explanation of what all the upgrades do can be found elsewhere (the manual is a good place to look, but some of the info isn't completely accurate. Try doing a search for "upgrades").
10: Availability of new evolutions, upgrades, and attacks is determined by how many hives you have. At no hives you can use your first attack only. At two hives, you can use your second attack and gorges can build one type of upgrade structure. At two hives you can use your third attack, and gorges can build another type of upgrade structure. At all three hives, you can use all four attacks and gorges can build all four upgrade chambers.

    noooo

    the manual is wrong.

    dont believe it.

it is still the 1.0 manual, hasnt been updated to 2.0, so many of the features you read about in it may not exist. it is a good way of getting the basic idea of what each class is used for, as their roles havent changed much
