When I can pull it off...
Build Strategy For Beginning: 2 IP, 1 ARMORY, 1 OBSERVATORY (all in base)
This is what I normally do right off the bat; I send all but 1 of my marines to the double res node (Assuming that I have 4 - 5 able bodies). When they are at the double resources I build: 1 TURRET FACTORY, 3 TURRETS (making a triangle around the TF). Then I plop down both res nodes.
Now with three res nodes available (1 base, 2 in double node) I send out squads of two to nearby resource nodes. If I'm playing on a good public server I can get both of the marines to cover their backs, and it makes it easier... because we all know marines love to Rambo on public servers. When they reach a res node I build: 1 RESOURCE TOWER (then I electrify immediately).
Next step is to scan all the hives, and find the inhabitted / undefended ones. Concurrently I build: 1 ARMS LAB and I upgrade my ARMORY. Now that I find out which hive (or hives!!) they have, I send out all of my troops to the least defended hive (and this happens RARELY, where everyone follows my orders). My squad of 4 - 5 will be equipped with 2 shotguns, and the rest LMG. I then send 2 of my other men to the uninhabited hive. I upgrade PHASE TECHNOLOGY, then I UPGRADE level 1 weapons / armor at the same time. Mind you, this is roughly 5 - 9 minutes into the game. When res permits, I build: A PROTO LAB in base, but if my squad of 4 - 5 actually do get somewhere important (it never happens though) I cancel the proto lab and build: 2 TURRET FACTORY, 1 PHASE, 8 - 12 , 1 OBSERVATORY.
Now with my squad of 2 that I sent to the hive, (they tend to be untouched in my games, as aliens tend to try to take out the larger groups.) I tell 'em to hide in a corner and blow anything up that notices them. Then, I immediately build a sturdy defense (composed of the same thing above (2 tf... 1 pg... 8-12turrets... 1 obs)
This should all take place roughly 12 - 22 minutes into the game.If successful, this ends you up with 2 hives, 4 - 6 resource towers, and upgrades.
A moderate outcome is that you end up with 1 hive, the double res and your base.
Flaws in my strategy: There are some key times that my base was undefended, and it doesn't always go this smoothly. You could very well end up with only the double res, and 1 hive. But thats good enough. Save up for HA and give out shotties religiously.
