Commander Hotkeys

<div class="IPBDescription">squads...</div> Ok, I play a fair amount of RTS's and am used to a few things I'm not seeing an obvious way to do here... the most serious being, how do you form a squad composed of specific people without them all being in your view simultaniously?

In starcraft or warcraft or pretty much anything else, I would just hold down shift, and select whoever I wanted till i had the group formed and ready to be control-grouped or made into a "squad" in NS's case... As far as I can tell the only way to do grouping in NS is to grab a bunch of marines in your view with the box and hope you got the right ones in there....

Is there a bind or something that enables this or do I have to catch everyone in my view at the same time haphazardly during the game to accomplish this?

    AFAIK, you have to do that. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Yeah. There should be a <b>'marines button'</b> you can press within the commander interface, which brings up a dialog box with all the marines playing listed inside it. Then you could select individual ones (or hold duck to select more than one) in there and add them to groups. You could also bring the box up to simply select individual marines to give them waypoints, or jump to them if they are asking for a resource tower or something. Then they don't have to be in a squad to be able to do this.

    if it's any comfort, it's rare that people stay organized enough to stay in squads anyway =P like, you could be lucky enough to organize 3 squads of 3 people... but 1 person from each squad will probably wander off by themselves away from the waypoint, ignoring your orders, and another couple will jump around and not watch each others' backs... long story short, keep most of your marines together, and build a lot of turrets for D =P and use voice com a lot, and phase gates... even the idiots use those to get to places they have to defend...

    taken from <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=1&t=39260' target='_blank'>this thread</a>:

    -- o Holding crouch while selecting units will add them to the current selection.
    -- o Creating a hotgroup removes those entities from other hotgroups (more intuitive and easier to make squads using select-all).

    soo apparently what you're asking is possible -- you CAN ctrl-click someone to add them to current selection... if they'd hold still long enough, heh. also, you can select all, add everyone to squad one, then select 2 ppl, add them to squad 2, and they'll be removed from squad one... so it's pretty dynamic... though I haven't tested all these possibilities.

    Here's all the new comander selection stuff:
    <ul>
    <li>Holding crouch and selecting marines (can be click, OR click and drag) will add those marines to your current selection.
    <li>Holding crouch and pressing a number key will add the currently selected marines to that hotgroup. They'll all hear "you are group *blah*", see that message at the bottom of their screen, and see squadmates as green arrows on their minimap.
    <li>Pressing the picture of a marine in a circle at the top of your display will select all marines.
    <li>While you hold down crouch, your voicecom will only be sent to the selected marines.
    </ul>
