Putting your savings into a bank account
I tend to play skulk alot of the game, and as a result tend to accumulate alot of res which I use to buy the team resource towers and upgrades.
Sometimes when my kills are good, I like to invest in my walls of lame. I like to think of them like a bank account, you put your resource savings in there, and now and then an unwary marine walks into your death trap and you pocket the interest.
In v1.04, whenever a gorge put up a wall of lame, the team would complain, but in v.2 it really helps slow down the marines, if you strategically place them. When the marines are spending time attacking your walls of lame, you know that it's better than them attacking your hives.
Sometimes, I feel like a landlord, as a skulk I circle the territory and check on my walls of lame and picking up the rent. Like a good taxpayer, I put my earnings back into the community, and buy hives and upgrades so the kids can play safely.
I must be a model citizen.

Some players need to learn, spending your 30-50 res to make a wall of lame or a defended res point ends up earning you and your team much more in the long run than saving it all and going fade 5 minutes into the game. It's the almighty cycle of res.
RESOURCES -> BUILDINGS -> UPGRADES -> KILLS -> RESOURCES
or perhaps...
RESOURCES -> BUILDINGS -> KILLS -> RESOURCES
Just cut out that whole middle man of you doing the work.
A good WoL or Kill Nest as I have taken to calling them will earn you a ton of res if placed well. My faveret is to rush the double res and build 2 Ots there. As I gain res by killing I will stop bye and plant a few more OTs and whatever chamber we are using.
Thats what I do too, double res real estate is a real money earner, all the other players are wondering why I'm building OCs instead of resource towers, but I know that I'll get the resources back when the unupgraded marines rush to the double resource point to die!! As soon as I get enough resources, I'll cap the nodes if they haven't been capped already!
Means that the double resource nodes are safe from the marines, while I got my little earners already set up. Saves a lot of resources than later, than your team wasting Onoses trying to get back a double resource node thats been secured by marines.
I think it's better to put up walls of lame than have early Onoses, it's about stalling for time really, giving your team the extra time to save up for a mass attack, rather than single Onos rambo missions.
I've never actually had a situation where I've had both the res AND nothing to build other than WoLs.
