this happens not only in ns, but pretty much all the time, seemly at random. Ive had this comp for aobut a year, but this just started happening last night

a message box comes up and says that says:
"this system is shutting down. Please save all wrok in progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. THis shutdown was initaitaed by NT AUTHORITY\System
Windowns must now restart becuase the Remote Procedure Call {RPC} service terminated unexpectanly"

some remote thing had been disable and to shut down all programs, a 60 sec timer comes up, and afterward the comp restarts.

its getting to the point where it will restart every 10 mins <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

running windows xp

    Sounds like you've been hit by the Blaster worm, which surfaced in recent days.
    Bring up your Task Manager (3 finger solute) and look for a process "msblaster.exe" and terminate it.

    However, it won't end there. Search and delete that trojan/worm from your computer and download the patch from Ms (Wow! that was quick, this time!) to fix the system vulnerability.

    Meanwhile, you might want to turn on your firewall and block port 135 to prevent the worm from launching DOS attacks from your computer.

    I believe there are plentiful of forum discussions out there about this.

    The simplified version: Just Google it. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Download blaster removal tool here: <a href='http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.removal.tool.html' target='_blank'>http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen...moval.tool.html</a>

    Download MS hotfix here (by the way, these were available over a month ago - if you have this virus it's because you are not maintaining your PC as well as you should be): <a href='http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp' target='_blank'>http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/...in/MS03-026.asp</a>
