<div class="IPBDescription">Please help me!</div> Ok this is what happened...
I run a NS 2.0 server and last night, I was playing on it fine using the Open GL 640x480 graphics mode. It worked perfectly on Open GL.
Then, after I quit the game, I wanted to tune up my server computer so I shut the server down and I ran Ad Aware 6.0 (deletes spyware and stuff like that) and Registration Cleaner (Monsieur Evil recommended this in his fine XP tuning guide). Ad Aware and RegCleaner caught some stuff and I deleted all of the "caught" stuff (like spyware and unused registration keys).
WHen I woke up today, I tried to play NS 2.0 on my server and low and behold it says "this mode of Open GL is NOT supported by your video card ..." I can't get NS/HL to run on Open GL on ANY resolution anymore.
I tried almost everything, including rebooting/shutting down my comp, installing the newest vid card drivers, and even installing the newest version of Direct X (version 9, I believe). And all of these methods do NOT work and I still can't use Open GL for HL.
My computer specs is this:
P4 1.8 ghz, 256 megs of ram
Windows XP
Dunno my sound card (its irrelevant to the problem at hand)
Nvidia Riva TNT2 Model 64 (that's my vid card).
Again, i installed all of the newest drivers and i even updated Direct X. nothing is working.
I'm thinking about reinstalling Half Life altogether cuz that may be what was deleted last night by adaware/Regcleaner.
Please help me!!!
THank you so much!

I had a problem like this too.
You might actually want to try an older driver first. From the nvidia archives website. The last time I had problems with my Nvidia card and HL saying my card didnt support it I downloaded 30.82 drivers and it worked fine. Later I found out that my chipset drivers for my motherboard were waaaay outa date (also nVidia nFoce2 drivers) I updated them and updated to the latest Video card drivers and havn't had that issuse since.
Also! Each of these applications (AdAware and RegCleaner) make backups when they delete reg entries (in adaware it's quarantine, in regcleaner it's called backup). You may be able to look through, find the culprit key, and restore them without having to go through reinstalling drivers.
But unfortunately, it still didn't work.
It still sez "the selected mode of Open GL is not supported by your video card" whenever I try to connect to a server using Half Life's game browser. My comp also crashes whenever i try to manually access the console when I set it in open gl mode.
I felt like i've done everything already, guys. I've restored the quarantine stuff from Ad Aware and I've restored the backups for Reg Cleaner and it still displays the same message.
I took Haplo's advice and I downloaded the old 30.82 (or whatever Haplo recommended) driver and it still didn't work.
Finally, I browsed through the reg cleaner backups and the nearest key that regcleaner cleaned out that I could find that somewhat related to HL/NS were these two:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Start Menu\Programs\natural selection 2.0]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\IMAPI\StashInfo]
"StashPath"="C:\\WINDOWS\\Temp\\StashIMAPI.bin"
However, I restored them and I even rebooted my computer and nothing worked.
Dang ... can you please give me some more suggestions guys?
Thanks a lot! and I wanna thank Monse and Haplo for trying .... please help me guys!
I have one more workaround for you, but it's time consuming - let's try this first.
But argh!! I already thought of that before I read your post.
I had Ad Aware restore EVERYTHING in its quarantine list (so now, the number of items in my Q list is 0!)
I had Reg Cleaner restore ALL of its backups.
Then I rebooted .... didn't work
I reinstalled the LATEST drivers from Nvidida ... rebooted ... didn't work.
Aiyah ... Monse, I'm ready to do whatever "final workaround" that you can think up for me, sir.
But regardless of whether or not that workaround works or not, I wanna thank you for all the help that you gave me so far ...
Please help me again Monse ... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
Since I can't run the game in Open GL for reasons above ... I'm running the game on D3D.
Its SO much slower ... I never knew that my 3d card could even support d3d.
Software mode really stinks and d3d mode is so much slower (i usually get 40 fps with open gl but i get around 15 with d3d)
Please help me guys!
Thanx a lot everyone for ur advice!
*edit* Ya know I wonder how many people are having problems that are running NS using the 32 Bit color. Im sure some of these older cards are choking on that. (Just a thought)
The slow solution that will probably work, but should be done as a last resort? It's to uninstall HL and your mods, reinstall HL, load the latest 1.1.10 HL full patch, then reinstall NS 2.0. Then run the latest nvidia detonator drivers.
Hmm ... Haplo, I don't think its my motherboard that is the problem. Although I don't BELIEVE that I've ever updated my motherboard chipset, the thing is, it was working yesterday and it is not working today. Second, I followed MonsE's XP Tune Up guide so my color quality is set to 16 bit.
MonsE, yes, I checked every possible resolution for Open GL from the smallest (forgot what exactly it was) to the highest (1600x1200) and everything in between. Doesn't work <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->. My monitor is set at 60 hz refresh rate. Um ... I haven't quite tried completely uninstalling my vid drivers as of now.
I'll try completely uninstalling my vid drivers and reinstalling. I sure hope it will work sir.
If that doesn't work, I might have to use ur last resort MonsE. Oh yeah, I think that I should mention that I did uninstall HL (not NS 2.0 though) and I reinstalled it, patched it to 1.1.1.0 and it still didn't work. But i didn't uninstall my vid drives yet.
Well thanks a lot for your help Haplo and MonsE.
I will sure as heck get back to you on whether or not I got it to work or not.
If you have any more suggestions, then please, give them to me <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Finally, thanks again for all of your help guys. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
