The dangers of being funny

<div class="IPBDescription">Or, how fragmaster insulted darwin.</div>For those who have read the PHL review of NS by fragmaster, he's recieved a couple of hate mails regarding his one Darwin joke in the whole thing. Read the review (it's stickied here and also on the top of RR.org) and then consider the following:

---------------
From: Craven Morhead
Subject: Natural Selection

Leave the Bible humping anti-logic out of your articles, alright? Nobody goes to your site to listen to some Baptist half-wit rant about Charles Darwin. And furthermore, you run a site devoted to a game that involves constant killing. You also ridiculed a man who's been long dead. God might not appreciate that, you know? Might want to check your double standards at the door. Darwin was a brilliant man who dared challenge an out-of-date belief system and you, a low-level web moderator, have no business critizing his research since everything you've learned was from some shmuck in a robe shoving threats of fire and damnation down your slimey gullet. Stick to reviewing games, because your logic and reason fails miserably.

This man made Idiot Mail of the Week on PHL - let's give him a hand.

Well, his argument makes perfect sense... he just kind of missed the target by a few *states*.  And I'm talking like midwest states, not those shrimpy little New England states.  He's not a stupid person... he's just... well... a stupid person, I guess.  Ah well.

Not only is this person stupid, he ruined the fine name of the only good DJ on the radio, that jerk . . .

I should probably explain that, but at the moment, i feel it would be better to go for the mysterious, "WHAT THE HELL IS HE TALKING ABOUT?!?" vibe than explain. Also, I am feeling extremely lazy.

Some people (mainly people who've stuck to the AOL type nets before) take the net too seriosly, unless it's specificly a serious site you're suppose to assume everything is at least part joke\jest\parody. Lighten up ppl. (Now if only that guy could see this post)

I could understand completely what he said... well... by understand I mean that "I can read it". The whole thing is completely rediculous. He obviously has problems, doesn't understand jokes, is pro-Darwin, is a Satan-worshipper, went to HL to get angry at people, or he's.... well... stupid.

i never understood why people get so angry at such little things...im guessing that person is  A). Hillary Clinton, B). one of the judges who declared the pledge of allegiance "unconstitutional" C). darwins ghost....

although if we did come from fish would that mean that fishsticks are murder?

Judges declared the pledge of allegiance unconstitutional. Congressmen on the other hand got all angry about it. Speaking of which, you ever notice all the people getting all angry over that don't go to school or say the pledge on a regular basis?

That went off topic, and to get back on topic, and bring my total post count to 9:

Should it bother me that I do not feel the need to post in a topic about the constitution and a dead scientist? And should it bother me that I posted stating this?

The review poked a bit fun at Darwin, and people overact.  That's a quite common thing on the web.  Heck, I've been know to do the same for certain things.  Darwin is a tricky subject, because they are always people willing to argue a year and day over it no matter where you go.  It's similar to debating religion at a public forum (don't ever do it, it isn't pretty).

people who take anythign too seriously in real life or on the internet need to sit down and, well, take valium.  If they honestly believe sending an email to a guy will make a difference about how the entire world views the theorys of natural selection vs religion then well, they need to take more valium.

I don't even think the author at PHL was stating any religious views.  The name of the mod was Natural Selection.  Of course Darwin would come up.  And calling Darwin blasphemous was just ironical.  And funny, I thought.

BTW, does anyone know what Darwin was studying to be before he was invited to go on the HMS Beagle?  Bonus points if you can call it!

    -Ryan!

To be sure, the vast majority of people who are untrained can accept the results of science only on authority.  But there is obviously an important difference between an establishment that is open and invites everyone to come, study its methods, and suggest improvement, and one that regards the questioning of its credentials as due to wickedness of the heart, such as [Cardinal] Newman attributed to those who questioned the infallibility of the Bible...Rational science treats its credit notes as always redeemable on demand, while non-rational authoritarianism regards the demand for the redemption of its paper as a disloyal lack of faith.

Wasn't he studying to be a priest or something similar?
  • HBNayrHBNayr Join Date: 2002-07-13 Member: 930Members
Good job, Morso, the Force is strong with you.  He was indeed studying to be a Priest.  He described his beliefs as customary for the time, and then was invited to go along on the HMS Beagle.  While observing the isles he saw, he began to wonder if God's intervention was really needed to progress a species.

So the next time someone say Darwin was an atheist, and that's why he thought the naughty thoughts he did, you can smile and nod, content with your newfound knowledge that they have the cause-and-effect seriously confused.

    -Ryan!
