Please, put the question in the -body- of your post next time as well... <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

For those of you who missed his subject, the questions was: Why the name Natural Selection?

Ok, the whole premise of the game is that you have marines and aliens fighting over who controls a remote sector of space. The aliens are fighting to survive, and so are the humans, as the rest of the human race has pretty much pulled out of that sector. It's survival of the fittest, ergo: Natural Selection.

    - What's up with the name Natural Selection?
Dunno. I think Flay was drunk. (Ed.- Actually, it refers to the Darwinian process of weeding out the genetically inferior, usually by conflict).

I got this from the RR FAQ, should help too.

Part of the appeal of the name is also that it doesn't imply any sort of judgement or bias.  The aliens are not an evil species that must be exterminated; the marines aren't greedy expansionists that need to be taught a lesson.

It's just two species that unfortunately occupy the same space.  May the more adaptive one win.

so your saying the marines were commanded to destroy the aliens and the aliens responded by fighting back? <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

not agreed. The aliens are parasites. They are adapted to expanding through the universe, which is only needed if they are expanding REALLY great, since one alien is about the size of a marine. To expand in space they really have had alot of aliens, as i dont think that the earth isnt the first alien species they conquered. Also, they transform other habitats to there own, making it unable for the other species to live. As the hive is a little bit intelligent i think (at least intelligent enough to think about alien tactics, as they are all from the hive mind) they are all to be exterminated. You could say they are just a specie who needs to parasite, as a earth parasite has to, which is true, but its a bit different, murdering one plant or a whole planet.

    -

the humans are just the same parasites, they are so overcrowded they need to expand, but they deserve to die as well.

You are true... but i think parasites ALL NEED TO DIE!!!!!! DIE EVIL MISTLETOE!!!!! DIE!!!!!DIE!!!!! *moves away to get his heavy machinegun*

Personally I wonder if there are plans to scare the aliens.  We've all heard about ways to scare the marines silly with Bobs but not vice versa.  The reason this is connected it that NS gives the impression of Big Scary Aliens vs. Little Green Men (marines in their sexy green armor).  Kindof skews the view don't it?

Humans have evolved a more complex brain then your average bug (or in this case, primitive alien). Given our large mass of muscle in our heads, we are capable of experiancing many things, including emotion and yours basic motor skills.

To my understanding, the aliens doing all the dirty work (killing Marines and ravaging their base) are far to primitive to be capable of feeling "fear". They are programmed to do as they are told. If something is labelled as a threat by their controller, or by themselves, they most likely will engage the hostile presence.

It's somewhat difficult to explain, and it's late. I need sugar or something.

There's an agruement but then the aliens suffer a borg complex.  Either way, it doesn't paint them on the same moral ground as the marines (right now I'll say there Zerg level evil).

I wouldn't view the aliens as parasites. They have as much of a right to live as you, altho they may be trespassing <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->

I'm not 100% on the origins, but I view the game as very much a battle of Man VS Nature. The humans, who are high tech, intelligent, organised, technology dependant, are being overrun by these creatures who only build things from their own flesh, and who have already taken over a large quantity of the Aridian Arm. They live only to breed and survive, and don't seek anything more. So, who will win? Is it humanities time to step down, or are the aliens just another species in the way of their path to glory? It's Natural Selection - survival of the fittest. This is a battle between species, to see who will come out triumphant, and there is NO 'right' side.

who says the aliens are primitive? and then... maybe they are, but they are all connected to a hive who can think.. but i think scaring an alien is not possible, you have to scare the hive, which would be much harder...

Who said they were primitive? I didn't. ALL their technology is organic, though...so I wouldn't say they were unevolved. They are creatures of instinct.
