Onos: Redemption Vs Regeneration

Uses for both
In many of the 2.0 games I have played it seems to me that 90% of the time an alien player evolves into an onos, that he chooses redemption as his defense chamber ability. While redemption onos have very high survivablity, I don't understand why so few people use regeneration onos.

Redemption Onos:

Pros-

-Very hard to kill, is good at devouring important marines, (be they skilled or just well-equipped) and escaping the marine team's vengeance.
-Is good for protecting the 100 resource investment at hive 1, when stomp is unavailable.
-Can be very demoralizing to the marine team.

Cons-

-Cannot remain in battle as long as an onos with regeneration or carapace (I wouldn't recommend carapace however.)

Regeneration Onos:

Pros-

-Can take out a marine outposts with little difficulty (Assuming they are guarded with turret farms/ 1-3 stock marines)
-Can spend more time in the fray.
-Generally more destructive.
-Even better paired with Celerity

Cons-

-More likely to be killed by a group of determined marines.

I almost always choose regeneration over redemption myself, as for it's usefulness in taking out marine outposts and small groups of marines, it also allows me to spend more time in battle. Which do you find more useful and why?

I have to vote for redemption in the early game, carapace in the late game.

Losing a 100 res unit in the early game is absolutely crippling. And it's too easy for an onos to get stuck on some odd little map brush and get shafted. Redemption is your insurance against losing your uber-unit due to bad luck, lag spike, whatever.

In the late game, it's better to have the extra health/armor, and not have to haul your buffalo self around the map every time your health dips below 200.

    Early game - Redemption
Middle game against lights or on patrol - Regeneration
Middle game against few heavies - Regeneration
MIddle game against many heavies - Redemption
Late game - Regeneration, unless they mustered heavies

Regeneration has the added advantage that, against lights, you can often stay in the fray almost indefinitely. If you kill them fast enough, and make sure to have on devouring, you heal like mad. The investment in the late game is limited, and in the middle game, you don't want to get redeemed just before finishing off a pack on its way to smack a res node around, but can afford the death if absolutely neccessary (plus, it's hard to die).

What about working with a gorge only using Carapace as the gorge heals you and lays DCs around ? As a carapaced Onos backed by DCs you can hold several HA HMGs and protect the battle gorge which can bile bomb turrets or even web marines for you.

its pretty situational. regen is good unless i know i'm playing against really good marines, otherwise i go redemption. i've used carapace when we had lots of DCs to heal and we needed to crack a huge turret farm.

I find that the Onos is better Redemption untill you get your third hive. Which is when you unload the Onos with Regen and adren. If you charge at turret farms you do so much more damage than an onos with carapace or redemption and adren. regen just provides more protection that carapace if theres is less than 3 rines tehre.

This is sorta off topic, but one of the dumbest and most hilarious things I've seen is an onos getting destroyed in the middle of gestation. This isn't a rare thing either, it happens quite often. Just keep in mind that you should find a hidden spot for gestation, not just someplace out in the open.

BTW, redemption is good early game. Regeneration is also good if you're careful enough, but if you find yourself redempting a lot as onos, get regen.

At anything above 1 hive I use regen, and celerity if its available. Then just like the rest of the aliens hit and run...

well since losing 100 res is horrible and breaks your heart how u know u waited sooo long and got so many kills to reach your goal only to try and devour a marine in a group or in a tf area and get destroyed

If you have movement and defense: Get regen, and your movement upgrade of choice, probably celerity. The reason for this is that if you have movement chambers, you should also have a lerk umbraing you 24/7. Regen onos with proper umbraing can take enough punishment that it can take down almost anything with low risk, so there's no need for redemption. This also goes for when you have all 3 chambers, of course.

If you have sensory and defense: Get redemption. Lerks can't keep you alive properly, so you need the escape if you run into a group of marines. Also makes for a nice "uncloak, gobble a heavy, and disappear when they shoot you" combo.

If you have only defense, and you're fighting a 2 hive lockdown: Probably redemption is best, unless you can get multiple gorges to powerheal you and you have DCs nearby, in which case either carapace or regen might be best.

If you have only defense, and there's a hive free: Stop being a greedy bastage, gorge up and start a freaking hive! Or yell at your team to do it, someone probably has 45 or more if you have 100. It's better to have an onos and a hive than to have two people around 50 with a hive started. Unless you're both good fades, of course.

    Well, those are my thoughts.

Well, since the only thing onoses are used for now is eating the most expensive marine and then retreating, Redemption is the one that makes the most sense. Especially when the entire damn team goes onos and blocks any hope of retreat on foot. Hello 20-hour stalemate.

I normal go for redemption when the marines are all in hev armor and have big guns, so the guy I eat is gone for sure.

However, if the marines have only lmgs I normaly go for regen, so I can do more damage to their turrets.

Carapace if I am feeling confident and have gorge/DC healing, regeneration if I am confident but have no healing, redemption otherwise. I usually only go onos at the endgame so carapace is pretty common on me.
