It's yet to be determined. My experiences as a kharra so far tell me that 8 vs 8 seems just as balanced as 5 vs 5. But then again, everything still feels new, and we're all playing around with new abilities. The marines are disorganized and sometimes can't even get a commander in the chair, but still manage to pull together a victory in about 1 in 4 games. I notice many turning points, where one side or the other gains or looses a key area and the whole team bands together to counter the gain/loss. Resources gained by kills play a key role, and tend to reward winning streaks, but the new alien abilities and support for multiple gorges makes gameplay less predictable, for both sides. (The marines don't know what the aliens are gonna do next, and neither do the aliens. )
My advice? Go for a packed house. Set your player limits as high as you can without loosing speed. It's not like NS 1.04 where small games were better for one team, and large games were better for the other. Strategy and teamwork really are more important than sheer numbers. Or at least they seem to be, to me, so far.
much appreciate on your input warpzone i find the team with me usually loses quite handily. soo. my NS addiction seems to be curbing quite significantly, i've only played.. what.. erhm... 7 hours or so today. oh. wait

man with 32 players it is just crazy!!! we found that 24 players is working good.
10 on 10 seemed to work well but due to high demand yesterday we are trying our server with 14 public and 10 reserved slots so you might just see a 24 player game on there this weekend.
