I Hit Escape, My Computer Crashes.

Pretty clear-cut problem I have. Ever since the 2.0 update, when I hit escape to get at the menu while in-game, my screen goes blank and I have to restart. I've tried ctrl-alt-del, alt-tab, alt-F4, and good old waiting, but it is completely unresponsive until I hit the restart button.

Athlon XP 2200+
Shuttle FN45 motherboard
Radeon 9600 128MB
512 MB DDR PC2700
Windows XP Pro.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Uninstall NS and reinstall NS. Let us know how it goes.

All right, I finally got around to giving that a try, and it produced no change. It still crashes to a blank screen when I try to access the menu. Any other ideas?

Shameless bump, but I'd really like to get this solved. I enjoy using the menu.

This is a new issue for us in 2.0. Are you running D3CD or OpenGl? What screen resolution? Do you have 2 monitors or one?

Well my guess would be that you have yourself a nifty ATI card ?
I had this problem with halflife for the longest time. They finally released catalyst 3.4 drivers which solved the problem. The symptoms I had were like you described, on esc you get a black screen and it hangs your computer. Try the new drivers if not, you're **** outta luck. It took them forever to get the 3.4 drivers out. I did have luck using older drivers 3.2 or 3.1 drivers, you lose performance but it doesnt lock up =/

I'm running in OpenGL at 1280x960 (same as my desktop resolution) on one monitor.

I do have an ATI card, but the problem with new drivers is that they don't seem to really fix any problems and they give me a massive (30-40%) decrease in framerates. I guess, though, if they fix this problem, I'll have to weigh that against getting 20 fps in any modern game.

sounds like a catalyst driver problem common in the newer (dont know about the newest) catalyst drivers, when i tried catalyst 3.2 this problem came up, so i just went back to 3.1... not sure if they fixed this problem, but im using 3.1 and it works like a charm

Catalyst v3.5 were giving me random lockups if I pressed ESC. I upgraded to v3.6 and ESC works fine now, but I occasionally lockup when I type "quit" at console. *sigh*

Performance-wise, I am at 100fps 95% of the time with my 9800 Pro. It occasionally drops down to 70-80fps when looking at some areas.

I'm currently using the drivers that came on the CD with the video card, so I doubt reverting to older drivers would work.

I also get 100 fps almost all of the time, but I'm more concerned about other games (What? There are games besides NS?) that already strain my computer, like Gothic 2 and UT 2003. I think I'd be willing to give up the menu if it means getting better framerates in those games--unless, of course, someone can come up with some other workaround.
