a quick few tips.
Hi all.

Hopefully most of you are running the linux server with no problems.

For those who are having problems, here are a few tips.

1. When unzipping the file, make sure you do NOT use ascii CRLF->LF conversion (i.e. the -a flag of unzip) or run dos2unix style programs over the server files. We've seen some operators have problems with this.

2. The dedicated server .zip file only includes the HLDS compatible binary. If you are using HLDS then you need to get the updated ns_i386.so.gz that Flayra posted last night. Some mirror sites are picking this up now.

3. We're aware of problems on FreeBSD. Note that FreeBSD is not a target platform for us, nor is it a target platform for HLDS. We do not officially support FreeBSD, however we will do our utmost to help FreeBSD ops get up and running as we recognise that it's important to you.

4. The server binary is compiled with i686 optimisations. If you are trying to run NS on a Pentium or lower then this is why you are having problems (one might suggest you have bigger problems in life if you're trying to run servers on pentium class chips )

5. If you're reporting a problem then we need some basic information from you as follows:

OS Version (Distribution - and ff it's not 'stock' we need to know any modifications you have made.)
Kernel Version
glibc version
HLDS Version
Version of the ns_i386.so that you are running (i.e. stock or the new one).

I will be idling in #nsserver, the official ns server operators channel on gamesnet IRC all day today and I'll help out anyone I can. Please keep in mind though that this is a busy time for us and If I'm slow in responding it's because I'm dealing with lots of other issues. I will try to help anyone who has problems provided they can show a modicum of patience and of course, common sense

Questions like: "how do i run a lunix server?!!? OMG h3lp meh PLZ!" will be ignored or may even get a less than friendly response (hear that Monse? )

I have sucessufully installed ns on my lan linux server. Almost everything is
working fine, everything except that the clients don't find the server in their
lan games menu. The server can't be seen on the "lan games" menu on the
client. If i connect via console ("connect") then it
works fine. I can even see the game on gamespy.

    Who can i fix this?

I have already got this cvar:
    sv_ nomaster 1
    sv_lan 1
    mp_uplink 0
    (and arg) -nomaster -port 27015

Should i use another port? (the conterstrike mod works just fine on this port.(both are not running at the same time!)

    1,333ghz AMD thunderbird
    512mb SD ram
    100mbits netcard
    9.0 Redhat hlds port

Doesn't gamespy only deal with Internet based servers? and are the clients on the same subnet as the server?

Hello im just setting up a new linux server, i got everything to run right but the cpu usage is very high even on maps like eclipse. and the pings are also alot higher than they should be im located in las vegas,nv its in atl,ga i ping 90-100 and using a command console ping its 50-60. i think this is due to high cpu usage though.

    Server Specs:
    Quad Intel XEON 2.4Ghz Ht
1.5Gb Registered ECC DDR Ram Pc 3700
on 3 different backbones each oc-48,oc-12 connections
its also running hlds should i revert back to .0

I had planned to run 2 servers off this box but i cant unless i figure this out

You didn't give any exact details regarding the size of the server or the actual CPU usage but the #1 thing I would suggest you try first is reverting back to (with all the patches and the boffix.so running so no one can crash it).

Also, what distro/kernel are you running?

see im a newbie at the linux versions so im not quite sure where this all be located
it has cpanel installed when i looked a server info when running ns the dot was red.

ok i found the Kernel version 2.4.20-20.9smp
Server Load 2.22 (4 cpus) without ns running

If the server load is 2.22, then the box is doing a lot of other tasks, which is why there's little performance left for HLDS. What else is running on that server?
