<div class="IPBDescription">or whatever</div> I have a question - where would i update my video driver?
I have a ATI RAGE MOBILITY-M1 AGP
for a laptop.
It doesn't support OpenGl, so i use DirectX 9.0b
How and where would i update it, cuz its only 8.0 mb (whatever that means)
ati.com is telling me to contact my manufacturer (sony), cuz it doesn't update notebook computers or some other crap like that.

simply put in "ATI RAGE MOBILITY-M1 AGP drivers" and found this:

Seriously tho, many compliments on your incredible computering skills and everlasting (so far) patience.
edit/ crud - after much searching... it turns out that this model of computer sucks so much that no one bothered updating the video driver. Thanks for the help anyway, looks like my framerates gonna go down the crapper and stay there.
Do you have any other ideas of how to make a computer run faster without actually paying any sort of money? Because if i did that i might as well get a new cpu.
Your driver and tuning questions depends on if you tell us what your OS and hardware is, naturally. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
ok um here goes:
Windows 2000 Professional
Dail-up connection to university 20 miles away which im ASSUMING runs some sort of T1
ATI RAGE Mobility M1 8mb
YAMAHA DS/XG Audio (WDM)
130,544 kb RAM
Did i miss anything?
And ya, i know my cpu sucks massively. Feel free to tell me that.

You need more ram =)
For tuning Windows2000 for better performance, try our tuning guide:

even tho the help wasn't very helpful and im very frightened of the guide (read it through, half of it says that if you don't do this EXACTLY then ur comp will explode and even if u do it might burst into flames anyway) i really appreciate your concern. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
crystal - couldnt find anything. i am pretty sure that my 8mb video driver is the most recent one, since this model isn't that great. Hell, from so much gaming, the front has overheated and eroded, leaving grayish plastic splotches here and there. And the "u" key fell off, i superglued it back on <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> So i think that the only way to make this thing run faster is to focus on the winders 2000 aspect of it. I did all of the notsodangerous things that your guide recommended.
By the way, i only have windows service pack 1. Is that good or bad?
-Slappy
Because NS v 2.0 took me exactly 9.5 hours to download, and service packs seem pretty huge.
Thanks again for all your help.
edit: Geezus its 128 freakin megabytes ! ! one one two @ @ !! ! one tilde tilde <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> I am predicting... 10 hours
more edit: they don't even offer service pack 4 not that i would download it, but why don't they? they meaning microsoft.com
<a href='http://download.microsoft.com/download/win2000platform/SP/SP3Express/NT5/EN-US/sp3express.exe' target='_blank'>http://download.microsoft.com/download/win.../sp3express.exe</a>
edit: can you answer my last question? <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->they don't even offer service pack 4 not that i would download it, but why don't they? they meaning microsoft.com <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
And the express method will be faster and smaller , trust me - how much depends on the fact that appear to have done no real maintenance in some time (SP1 was old 2 years ago). That's what you were asking. I would recommend doing the larger full IT install for other reasons, but if you don't want to wait as long, the express is just fine.
edit: instead of 4
edit: why would downloading all of it be a good idea (i.e. what other reasons that you didnt mention that you would recommend for other resons?) that came out well <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Feel free to jsut completely ingore this post if its going to take you a page and a half to explain everything. (unless of course, you dont mind, in which case, yammer on!)
It's got some pretty odd gaming stability issues, and MS has been cranking out hotfixes for it like mad. It will be fine in a month or so, I'm sure, I just recommend waiting a bit. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Is that you yammering or am i driving you nuts? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Hate downloading this i gotta another whole night without NS i mean geez the pains i goto to play this thing.
Well, im off to play TFC, at least my comp can handle that most of the time while downloading as well (suicide for me of course, i would have a ping of 1000's but hey, gotta play something i mean what am i supposed to do? Go outside? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> )
Onto the relevant part of my post - is it possible that i will ever get this game running smoothly? Or am i just trying to supercharge this piece of crap just to humor myself?
Also - is there a way to change the resolution of structures to say, 320*240 while the rest of the game runs at 640*480? Cuz its the buildings that really mess me up. Takes me 10 minutes to stumble over to the armory cuz of all the lag <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Also, i cant seem to find vsync and antiscoptric filtering and anti aliasing and all that other complex stuff. Is my video driver just too primitive to even have these features?
AND - should i select "EAX support" etc etc because currently i don't because i have no idea what it does.
edit: Just dowloaded and installed service pack 3. Took me twelve hours and 30 minutes
