May not seem related to mapping... at first

<div class="IPBDescription">But it is a very important question</div>When is the welder accessable? Is it available to use as soon as the game starts, or is it something that takes time to research? This second question may have been answered already, but are all 3 hives already grown but not useable until they aliens get there or what?
I ask this cause I want the marines to have to break into a sealed off facility and they have to open the main airlock/blast doors by using the welder to gain access. I am also trying to create another optional objective for the marines to follow that allows the instant removal of a hive from the map as part of a story element. Here is an exerpt from my design doc:
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td><b>Quote</b> </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE"><!--QuoteEBegin-->Before the sensor net went down, we noticed that the aliens were growing what seemed to be a nest of some kind in the transit phase field generator itself. TSA-RD wants this nest, or hive if you will, for further study. This is an opportunity that they could not pass up. They already have another facility setup and awaiting the hive’s arrival via gate. All we have to do is input the new coordinates, and reinitialize the phase gate’s transit system.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I plan on posting the full design doc as well a map layout when they are done.

Comments
Aliens start with only 1 hive built, picked at random from the 3 in the map, they have to build the other 2.
Trying to build a plot into a multiplayer map as large as NS needs would be a mistake, it's already difficult enough without giving yourself extra work.

dould be a mistake
could be a mistake?
would be a mistake?

Maybe Im just too ambitious when it comes to this stuff, and I had already finished a design doc and scetched a layout, both of which will be posted anyways as soon as the map is scanned.
I beleve that my primary mission objective would be possible as well, its mostly just throw some switches and let 'er rip... <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo--> The marines can always just go ahead and do the secondary mission objective failing the first, and that would be just kill all aliens.
Besides, the plot element is mainly in the backstory to my map. I know you can embed text messages into a HL map, perhaps I can just display the Objectives on a Marine player's screen when he spawns or have it displayed on something in the readyroom.
