Soundcard Info

Hey there, I'm thinking of possibly purchasing a soundcard, and being as I think of this forum as my home away from home, complete with knowledgeable family and all, figured I'd see what the community thinks...

My current system is a p4 2.4ghz, radeon 9700 pro, gig of pc2100ram system. Plays games pretty well.

I'm not thinking of purchasing huge speakers to put all around my computer area to immerse myself in sound, I suppose my main question is that with the asus p4g8x deluxe motherboard I'm using, and with its onboard sound (an avance ac97 i believe), would it be a worthwhile venture for me to invest in some kind of soundcard?

Like I said, I'm not using huge surroundsound speakers, just the two lil desktop ones and some headphones, I guess my main niggle is with grand theft auto: vice city, the sound gets...weird during cutscenes. I guess another question would be if I'd get any performance boost in the frames per second or performance categories by using a soundcard rather than onboard sound. Thanks!

If you're not going to be using a bunch of speakers, why not just get an Audigy mp3+? It's $70 on Newegg.

If you don't mind OEM, you can get an Audigy 2 from Newegg for $78.

I'd recommend an SBLive! Value. The Audigy line is overrated, overpriced, and has glitches such as the 'squeal of death'. Additionally, the only difference between the Value and the platinum is the accessories it's boxed with, and one connector that is not soldered onto the PCB... oh, and about $100 cash.
