Outdoor Maps?

<div class="IPBDescription">is there any?</div> I was wondering because I just started playing isnt there any outdoor maps like on the surface of a jungle planet or in some ruins? The spaceships are fun but I remember seeing a screenie for some kind of temple ruin but it was all outdoor.

And if not will outdoor maps make it into 2.0 do you think?

    Currently there are no out door maps, because lerks and skulks will be able to run into the skybox. It has been suggested before that this be done, but nobody can seem to think of any way to make this idea work and not have to worry about lerks/skulks running to the skybix. There are however a couple of fun maps that are outfoors, but not really what you are talking about. Ns_castlewars is outdoors aa well as ns 1stsh!ttymap and there are others. But as far as a serious map no there are no serious outdoor maps ATM.

    nomblitzkikko aka skulkapult is the only ballanced outdoor map.

    There won't be any outdoor maps in 2.0, and it's extremely unlikely that NS will ever have offical outdoor maps. Technical issues aside, it was decided a long time ago that NS would not have them, as they go against the theme that the NS dev team have created for NS.

    Well, just make the skybox large enough and the lerk will be able to fly 1/8 mile high! ...and in HL2 (unfortunatly I keep referring to it) it will be 1/4 mile or 400 meters.
    The problem with outdoor maps is: Either the area is too free for marines to secure it or the hives are too uncovered for any alien to protect them except lerks and gorges.
    IMO even nomblizkikko is too free open for marines to stand a chance against fades. When the alien team decides to use oni to paralize and fades to burn the marines they have won the game anyway.
    If someone created an outdoormap with every weapon and ability considered like the devs did for indoor maps it would be cool. A jungle map for example would practically still be an indoor map. But as far as I know, noone is mapping one atm. Hey, maybe a xen jungle with these mean trees that hit you when you pass them? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    my map medevil is an outdoor map, but has some issues when servers try and change to it.

    sorry to hear that. i hope it is not just like all the other maps. you know: big walls to the sky and some passages.
    btw: is it meant to be called medevil? i could imagine people who don't speak English from their childhood on could mix this up <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> Good name anyway. Keep it even if you got it wrong.

    I am currently *trying* to make an "exterior" map. Well it's not 100% exterior cause all important rooms (ms, hives and res rooms) are in interior, but most of them connect to each other with exterior pathways, with rain and a very dark ambience.

    I had a hard time finding a workaround for the skybox problem (for lerks, jp's flying, and skulks climbing on it) and i wanted to respect the background story of NS so i made the NanoGrid™. <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif'><!--endemo-->

    It's currently a see-through grate texture that cover all skyboxes and that skulks can't climb on (func_illusionaries with the "invis from top down" flag so the commander can't see it), with drips of water falling through it. This is how i try to explain the fact that the commander is able to build even in outside areas.

    To explain (read:trying to) the fact that <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo--> can't climb on it, i added some trigger_hurt (jp's, lerks, fly carefuly too). It's like when u want to take a bath in powersilo, but on the roof. It's not the perfect solution but it's all i can think of. Skulking will still be ok as they can still climb on walls, it's really dark and i'll make a lot of good spots to setup ambushes. I'll add warning signs or maybe even electrical arcs or something visual to warn the player.

    I tried a lot of other entities, even func_seethroughdoor! but the alpha settings just didnt worked for me (normal?). Skulks can climb on func_walls and func_seethrough, but a comm cant build under a func_wall, and cant give orders under a func_seethrough (remember i also have a skybox on the top of that). Gah.

    i was meant to spell it medevil on purpose, i was gonna put evil traps in the map but never got round to it.
