Electric Motors

<div class="IPBDescription">Anyone into power?</div> Anyone know of 24v DC electric motors that give at least 20Nm of torque in the 800-2000W range. I was looking at electrically powered bike motors, but those are generally too weak. Need high-effiency, phase doesn't matter.

Also looking for shunt-resistors that don't cost an arm and a leg.

    ... Should I be worried about what you're going to do with these things?

    IN any case, I'm glad you came to ns.org's off-topic, the largest uncertified, uneducated body of elctric motor specialists on theweb!

    You can try <a href='http://211.217.75.113/Promotion/PDF%20CATEGORY/Motors,%20Drives%20&%20Linear%20Motion.pdf' target='_blank'>this</a>.

    It will power a small EV in a race. Objective of the race is to get the maximum number of laps within 1 hour, so efficincy(sp) is the primary concern. The majority of cars don't even make it to the hour mark, and ours after about 30 mins started slowing down 10-30 seconds per lap of .355 miles, we came off at 40 mins.

    Our car is 90 lbs lighter then the nearest competitor, weighing in at about 160 lbs w/o ballast. Our motor is stock, and the same model as the team that always wins, however the thing seems far overpowered for the application. Key differences would be the speed controller (upgrading ths year if we get enough money), gearing (which we intend to replicate this coming year), and areodynamics of the shell. Our shell is not exactly high-quality, but it's light as hell. We made the skeleton of aluminum bar and used Tyvek for the covering, so all in all it's like 5 lbs.

    Picture follows... Hope you like our numbers, it's kind of hard to print on a sheet of Tyvek... The guy in there isn't me, but this year it will be <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I'm the short, curly haired one. Oliver was/is/will be (hopefully on the latter) our primary sponsor.

    Now how does one <i>ever</i> get involved in something like this <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Our school is lucky enough to have a "Drafting, Design, and Technology" class in which we use CAD for drafting the first 2 years, design a house with full plans second year, and for the 3rd and 4th years, we can draft an IEP (Individual Educational Project) that after we get the instructor's approval, we can devote the hour of class time to it. Some people use it to build furniture, others write programs, build robots, build computers, one person made a wakeboard out of laminated wood...and then there is the electric car project. Everyone does what they want to (usually, sometimes there are group projects...) so it's all great fun and it's never a class that's boring to sit through.

    If anyone is feeling philantropistic and wants to donate money, I'll accept it! If you want to buy me <a href='http://www.curtisinst.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=cProducts.dspProductCategory&catID=11' target='_blank'>Curtis Instruments Series Motor Controller Model 1214</a>, that would also be accepted.

    edit: <a href='http://www.brusa.li/products/e_ah_zaehler117.htm' target='_blank'>Any of these</a> would also be nice.

    Uncertified and uneducated? The Electronics Engineering degree on my wall proves how untrue that statement is. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Unfortunately, I'm not really familiar with electric motors of that size/power. My specialization is board-level electronics. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Maybe you could design me a speed controller or amp-hour meter!

    Sycophant, there are 18000 members on this board, and you're one of the only ones with a degree in electronics. Thus, not a whole lot of people here are going to help any <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->.

    Yea, getting help with practical things is hard. Know how many people responded to my question about a good turkey gun? 0. thats how many.
