<div class="IPBDescription">And the doing therefore of....</div> A few days ago I was pretty much forced onto Windows XP Pro
to try and narrow down why my comp keeps restarting itself.
While XP Pro is running smoothly at the moment (still restarts
itself now and then, we think its now RAM issues) i'm told
that XP has alot of built in useless crap.
Such as:
Automatic Updates, apparently it's constantly using your connection
to check for updated files. But i've managed to disable this.
Net-Send: Thanks to one of the "sticky" topics in this forum i've
managed to stop those crappy pop-up ads.

What other crappy services need disabling? Anyone have a nice
guide to killing off this kind of thing?
At the moment I have 15 Running Processes if that helps. On Win98
I could get it down to a humble 7 <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> Win98 insisted on hiding certain
processes but I used AdaWare's log files to see which processes
where hding in the background.

Any info, links, tips, tricks, beverages, all welcomed.

Hm... XP hasn't given me much trouble. Well, it has, but not in the area of annoying "spoon-feeding for the computer illiterate" trash which MS are so famous for. Except for the auto updating and the god-awful new UI, I don't think I had to change much else...

The other thing about which XP bugs me is that Morrowind doesn't run well under it. But that's neither here nor there.

Gyah, I hope you check M$ every once in a while for updates, 'else your computer is going to be so riddled with security holes it'll look like it suggested square dancing in the middle of a Wild West shootout.

Is it even really worth it to upgrade from 2k professional to XP professional?

My roommate had a constantly restarting computer. Turned out that the outlet he was plugging it into was crap.

Well, the only reason I can see for upgrading to Windows XP is that so many things (i.e, graphics card drivers, games e.t.c) are not fully compatible with windows 98.

Personally, I detest Windows XP, but I will get it sooner or later, because I don't really have much choice <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

I agree with whatever MonsE says. MonsE says that XP is so much better than 98 and Linux. I agree with teh MonsEtar, he hasn't steered me wrong yet.

I have found that disabling all the visual stuff makes XP 10 times faster.

It can be done in the system control panel under Advanced and Graphical Performance, it stops all the extra shite that just slows down ur machine

the only problem ive had with xp is running DOS based games, because XP has no underlying DOS support, and the extra graphical junk all the bells and whistles can easily be disabled. (personally i appreciate using my extra cycles to make it look nicer, but to each his own)
