Need some opinions/criticism

Will this fit the style of ns?
Here are a few shots from one of the first areas of my long-in-planning map, ns_halcyon.

I have a friend who has done lots of skins for HL mods as well as CG artwork, and convinced him to help me with custom textures for the map. I took these and immediately applied them to the test room that I had built a week before. The results can be seen below.

What I'm asking of you all is for opinions; not only thoughts on whether or not it fits the style of NS, but also your own personal likes and dislikes. If you can see anything technical that is wrong, or I could improve on, I'd also like to know.

I saved these at 640x480 to conserve space, if you want larger shots, let me know.

Kind of. Can't say those supports do it for me. Prolly need to grunge up what you have, some, too.

Apart from the supports, I think its very nice indeed.

The supports look a bit.. bleh. I can't put my finger on it.

    Hee.

That support texture may or may not stay. But for now, it's staying, as he hasn't created anything better yet (seriously, he's only given me six textures to work with right now ).

i like those supports , glad to see you're still working on it cyon s:)
just look for another pipe texture, it doesn't blend that well with the surroundings imo

those doors look very, very sexy! great work. I also like the panel detail.

Piele's right about the pipes. That particular texture doesn't work too well in blue lighting conditions. I'm also in agreement with the others about that support texture. I dunno, I think that there must just be something in ns.wad that could fit, because right now I think you need just one more ns texture to make this room look right.

this is very nice, ive always loved clean looking maps

just continue Cyon, i think itll fit ns theme just nicely

I think the NS look is a bit more industrial. Add lots of dings, dents and pits. The support texture looks odd because there is strong directional shadowing built into it, when the light comes from the opposite direction it looks wrong.

    Love the little red glow.

Well, my friend made a fixed up version of the support texture that has a less directional shadowing effect, and a small triangular panel for the angled corner of the support.

He's also making a pair of new support tex based on the style of the panel detail seen on the doorframe. I'm going to try these out later and see how they look.

Oh, and clanpages is doing server maintenance, so that's why the images are temporarily down.

looks pretty good, but some of the textures dont match. they look a little 'photoshoppy' - they should also be a little more dirty and detailed. but, other than that, the ns theme is there - you just can't go wrong with the ol' corridor-to-door combo!

Well, to reply to comments thus far... I've gotten some good ideas on how to tweak both the texture set and some of the other features. I will of course be using this as a style base for the rest of the map when I expand it.

As for the suggestions of making it look more dirty and industrial: There will be industrial type areas, but for the most part the ship's construction is clean and relatively new. Probably not alot of grime and such will be added, except near the hives. I agree though, that dings and scratches on the textures would add to the detail.

    Keep it comin'

Looking good, those supports look more like vents to me. This looks like a perfect place for the marine spawn or not far off there. Nice clean and sparkly.

That blue lighting looks a bit weirdish, can't quite put my finger on it.

Well... If you're going to have some dirtier industrial areas elsewhere in the level, I bet this would fit just fine. If you were to show just the textures inside wally or someting, I probably would have shouted "No!"... but not after seeing these. Why? The lighting... is... awesome.

Same way the cleaner areas in ns_bast work out so wonderfully.. the ns theme is represented in the lighting instead of dirty textures textures. Wonderful job on that. So... as long as you do have some dirtier stuff, this would work out fine in my opinion.

BTW, I'm probably just a freak, but I think that pipe texture fits utterly perfectly there. Especially the shininess of it.. seems to accent the lighting.

Anyway, I don't think the textures fit the ns theme. But the way you implemented them here... works awesome. If I were you, I'd keep it!

Yeah im totally with ken on the pipes and fitting in perfectly with the lighting, i was thinking you can add grunge without actually changing the textures themselves also. The broken panel there is a perfect example, maybe if you added a particle system to the pipe suggesting its leaking. Just like Ken suggested that the lighting makes it fit very well into the theme of ns, I think you can probably have clean textures and add the grunge effect in other ways. THis is all imo though, so.... good luck with it, it looks really good so far. oh yeah, and those supports do look pretty rough

thats exactly what i thought, i think if you changed that pipe texture the shot would look just s tiny bit worse, as it adds a contrasting colour, i think it fits perfectly really.

that hallway is really nice looking! By the way, I think I'm becoming a bit of a freak for this, but the door kinda looks like a modified version of that bad door texture I posted in the artwork forum a while ago. Just the basic structure of it is the same, but what I mainly noticed was two lines coming down the middle instead of one, which is what I did in mine (by accident really). It doesn't really matter anyway, I'm not much of a texture artist, but I'm just curious as to whether or not you modified it.

Keep up the good mapping anyway!

jeez, this whole mod is making me see the half life engine do things i never thought it could. that looks on par with some places in JKII (modified Q3 engine).

LOL, actually I drew the basic outlines in Photoshop as a B&W GIF, then my friend used it as a guideline to create the actual texture. The door tex itself is only one door, so I kinda had to improvise to create that double door. I'll probably do some editing to make it look more like there's a crease there instead of two lines.

    This is the original texture:

It does look good and should be fine so long as you include some more industrial areas, as Ken said.

I have to disagree about the System Shock 2 ‘style’ though, a few clean looking textures does not equate SS2, theirs a lot more to it than that.

CyonPro is a good mapper, ns_halcyon will be a good map but I’d find it slightly offensive and disheartening to have my work compared to JKII. NS maps (official and community) look so much better than JKII its almost a joke ... I’ll save you all from my anti-Raven rant but just look at this and then go and look at CyonPro’s work again.
