On my 56k...
Hey, I get disconnected from the net about every hour. I looked in my settings and i made it so that it never disconnectes when I'm idle. I try downloading stuff while I'm sleeping, but it never gets more than 10-20 mb's before disconnecting....Anyone know why or how to make it stop this?

I think the problem here is that you have 56k. Seriously. I had 56k, crappy provider and it just would disconnect for no apparent reason every half hour or so. Including when someone picked up a phone...maybe that's a problem?

Actually, this is a problem that you can disable somewhere. I don't know where, all I know is, is that the same thing happened to me on AOL, and I eventually found something that made it stop.

    I d'know.

it may be that your provider is saving bandwith by killing your connection when it's idle, even though you said not to. dunno, I'd take it up with earthlink.

Providers usally put a limit on how long you can be on the internet. On my old 56k connection you could only stay on for 2 hours than they disconnect you.

yes, i think it is the fact that they disconnect you after a certain time limit to save bandwidth

one thing you can do though is get a download accelerator so that when you get disconnected you can get the program to dial up again and continue the download

Such programs are apparantly illegal and can get your account with your isp terminated...at least according to BT.

I Have a weird and didgy router, It will be fine when I manage to download a huge file at max download speed, and never disconnect me.... but if i'm just surfing the web/talking on irc/playing NS.... It disconnects every 99 minutes because it thinks I'm idle :/ GG nub router.

My advice would be to get a decent broadband connection.

Bt used to cut you off every 2 hours but now they have removed it (yey). Download accelerators are not illeagal if so why would DAP be sponsored by alot of people who had their adds on it

www.speedbit.com i think for DAP, its not brilliant buts its ok

disconnects... it could be a number of things. like they said it could be the provider. sometimes they are just having some technical problems, and if thats the case over time the disconnecting will stop.
i do not get very many random disconnects. there are times where i can not connect for a number of reasons, but thats not often. if you continue to have problems change your internet service. or get DSL or cable. and if your some where out in the country where those are not provided. get a T6 wireless internet. its reasonably priced. its not as good as dsl or cable but its ALOT better than 56k. and you will not have the frusteration of getting disconnected while DLing something. im getting a t6 wireless soon and i cant complain about that. its better than 56k and thats all that matters.

I feel for all of you 56k-ers... I never had a modem, but I had ISDN (64 and sometimes 128kb)... And althoguh it was "ultra-fast", I still don't know, how I could live without broadband...

And yeah, I've heard that some providers disconnect modems after a certain amount of time... Or the line drops or something...
