I Was Just Wondering

About those locked threads
I remember that one day I saw in S&I a thread where someone asked about those locked threads.
He asked that why don't you moderators just simply delete those threads instead of locking them.
And one of the moderators answered that they don't usually delete them, cuz there might be a reason to reopen it.

So I'd like to know have any of you moderators ever opened a locked thread?

they have opened a few, and the majority of the time they re-lock the thread after a short time (usually)

I won't say why the mods HERE do it, but I will offer an opinion as to why webforum mods in general lock rather than delete:

If you delete, you immediately have a crop of 10000 conspiracy/complaint lovers making conspiracy theories or just whining about the thread vanishing. "OMG what was in there and why do they want to hide it? WHAT ARE YOU HIDING YOU MEANIES?", etc etc etc.

    That concludes my $0.02.

Maybe the thread has/had some information that people might search for in the future?

also, if it's not deleted, the it heightens the chance of someone searching and getting their answer from the locked thread rather than clutter the forum up even more, with the same old questions that need to be locked again.

If it's deleted people just wonder where it meant. If it's locked and left in the public eye, it serves as an example of what not to post, and and whatever messages/warnings the moderator in question chooses to give remains.

At least, that's how I see it.

And after all, a good deal of the locked threads in here started as perfectly normal and valid threads, and THEN turned into a flamewar. Since the first part is still useful and contains information that people might want to search for, better just lock it.

    thats what i assumed

i think one of the mods replied to the same question in much the same way

i also agree with lolfighter, sometimes the threads do have useful information in them
