Need Help Making A P Model

<div class="IPBDescription">in 3dsmax5...</div> Ok, well, I need to make a P model for a weapon I have been ripping. From what I understand, I need to open up the original P lmg and then edit out the gun, put in mine, and assign vertices to the same bones as the original. If this is correct, how do I figure out which vertices are attached to what in 3dsmax5? Also, is this the same way you make heavy arms models, except you edit out the gun in a v_mg_hv model and add yours in?

Heavies and Marines have the same p_ model, so you only need to make one.

I take the original P_mg, decompile, then replace its modles/skins with the new ones I made. I name one .smd the refrence (forgot exact name) and the other a skeletal animation thing named "idle" I go to compile and it wont work. Why is this happening?!
