For my P1k
Soon I will be reaching my 1000th post. In honor of this, I wish to try something new, a photo sig. However as I can't photoshop worth a darn, I turn to you, the NS community. To incite you to make one, I will give the winner (i.e. the one's sig I used), some of my pre-v1.0 PT pics (some things in 2.0 aren't new to NS) along with a secret blackmail pic of Flayra dealing with 2.0!

The Rules:

Sig must be allowed to be used on this board (size, content, etc)

Sig must involve at least one of the following:
LamarckRead about Lamarck here
Crabs, samurai and/or members of the Crab Clan of Legend of the Five Rings Some Pics of Clan Members (especially Hida Kisada!)
Ronfar (the guy in my avatar and in Lunar 2)
A 1911 pistol Pic of which here
The Weather Lady from Tokyo Pig (an anime and sadly I don't know if there are any pics of here online)

NS elements aren't needed in the sig but will be factored in the judging.

Juging will be based on appearence, aesthetic, and connection to things mentioned above. Basically if I like it the most, it wins.

You can send me the sig pic/link to it the following ways:
A.) Email to Captain684@aol.com (Title it NS Sig Entry)
B.) PM
C.) IM (under HidaTsuzua)
D.) Post it here (links prefered but pics mod-willing)

Winner will be chosen July 29th. Thank you for your time.

Here is my first try at someone else's sig:

It stems from NS, Lamarc, and crabs.

*made it a bit brighter, I am working on another one too

That looks like Legionnaired's sig... Good Job anyway.

I'll take a crack at it (I've got the free time anyway )

The first one was inspired by the Legend of Five Rings site and Hida Kisada. The second is a combination of NS ("time to evolve"), Lamark ("conditions are favorable"), and Hida Kisada's emblem.

If anyone has any advice/tips for the backgrounds, I would be most appreciative. I can get the major parts of an image down, but I'm not skilled enough to know how to make a cool backdrop. And of course any suggestions from Hida Tsuza, since these are the sigs whom they will go to. I'll also still be tweaking with photoshop to see if I can come up with any other sigs.

On a side note, I used to purchase some kind of card gaming magazine that always gave booster packs of cards. In one issue, with the usual packs that I bought the magazine for, I recieved a pack of Legend of Five Rings from the very first set, and is actually still unopened, sitting in one of my storage boxes somewhere in my room. I wonder if its worth anything...

Wow, those all are good. As for background suggestions Grimm, you could do any sort of background though an NSy themed (marine or alien) one would be likely best.

Edit- A 1911 pistol is the background would be great also.

Rather than take up more webspace, I've just uploaded the new sigs in my earlier post.

I took some time tweaking with photoshop, testing different textures and various filters, but I still cannot come up with a satisfactory background. The one that is there now is pretty close, the red could be considered blood on the wall, although I don't consider it to be. I've been attempting to stay with a red/orange color range somewhat to match Hida Kisada.

I'm very satisfied with the background for Sig2, as it is a metallic/stone texture, although I may need to reduce the size of the crab emblem.

On a final note, which one would you like the pistol in? I didn't see that until after I had uploaded these, so I'd like to get your opinion for them.

Certainly workable if you do not like it.
  • GrimmGrimm Join Date: 2003-04-13 Member: 15448Members
That is exactly the stuff I need to learn how to make. How do you create such backgrounds, Legionnaired? Very very cool stuff thht I need to learn how to make.

P.S. I don't mind whos sig you choose, Hida Tsuzua, I'm actually having fun creating stuff in Photoshop. My summer has been really boring, so anything to keep me occupied, especially when I'm learning how to become better with the program, is good for me. And I might use one of my ideas for my own future sig.

Grim, the BG in my sig and the one i posted are remarkably simple.

Render clouds, sketch->water paper, then atristic->plastic wrap.

Next, do a polar co-ordinates, with polar to rectangular.

Open up Distort-wave. 999 generators, 1 min and 1 max on the amplitudes, and whatever values for frequency that yield a pleasing, smooth shape.

Copy the layer and rotate it 90 degrees, set mode to overlay, the do a lighting effects with two different colors for ambient and spot light. Default settings for materials will be fine.

    Easy to do, great effect.

Hey thanks Legion! I try to mess around with fliters but most of my work ends up lookin like garbage or I get frustrated because it dosen't look the way I want it to look. Now, thanks to you, I know another cool trick!

Either one Grimm. I looked at them and said "the barrel would look great back there." And I'm happy I'm giving you something to do. As for the pics, I'll give them to the winner and ask if they want to release them at large.

Very very cool, Legionnaired, very cool. I never would have tried to use all of those filters in that order. I am forever grateful to you.

Back to the sigs at hand, I've added the outline/form of the gun to the sigs. I couldn't really think of any better place to put it. Although I have to say I like the way the one gun seems to be pointing at Hida Kisada. If theres something you want changed about the guns, or any of either sig for that matter, just let me now. I just decided to make the outline/frame of the gun because it seems to fit a bit better.

I like the guns. It fits well with the top one. On the topic of the top sig, are you going to do a new background for it? As for the bottom one, maybe moving it up to the middle to show the whole game.
  • GrimmGrimm Join Date: 2003-04-13 Member: 15448Members
I've changed the background for Sig1 by using a combination of what Legionnaired posted and a Photoshop tutorial I found online, and I must say I am very please with how much better it looks than the other background. I moved the gun in Sig2 up more, although I had to scale it down a bit to make it fit better. Between the two sigs, now that I've added the newly learned beackground, I definitely like it Sig1 more and I can't wait to update my sig with a new background.

On another note, I've noticed that you've almost reached your 1,000th post, so you may want to be careful about posting if you're going to do something special for the 1,000th post.

I'd definately like to see em, sounds like you're doing a nice job. I have a hard time owrking with detail on such small canvanses, I like bigger, desktop sized ones bettah.

EDIT: Just saw you were updating the images, that looks good, good work.

I might have to take another crack at it.

Really cool trick that I learned that I combined with what I got from you Legionnaired:

Chose any color for either the foreground or background, and choose the other as black (in the color boxes). Filter> Render> Clouds. Make a new layer, reset the colors to black and white, and make a gradient in the new layer (I did mine diagonally, so the black was in the upper left and the white was in the lower right). Then change the layer style from Normal to Difference. Then, if you like what colors were created, merge the layers. You may have to tweak with the colors a bit to get a good combination, and you'll need to make sure that the could layer has enough variation/spacing (not too many large areas of either black or the color).

Also, what I did was I made the background in a 400 pixel by 400 pixel square, then selected the area that looked the best and copied it and resized it.
  • LegionnairedLegionnaired Join Date: 2002-04-30 Member: 552Members, Constellation
    Coolness, thanks for the tip.

I made a nice second attempt, 400x400 image, same efffect as I described before, with a slightly modified wave setting to get a large portion of the image on the bottom of the screen, then copy the layer, flip horizontally, turn to overlay then merge, then copy and overlay. That made the background, then I whipped up a simple little mettalic thing with clouds, noise, motion blur and crosshatch, cut holes with the poly lasso, and fiddled with layer styles....

I'm still not happy with the guns, but I'm working on it.

I didn't know precisely what you wanted, be it a messy ethereal-type theme or a clean-looking one, so I just did what my gut told me to. The small white text in the background is a lamarck quote-not really meant to be read, but meant to be....subliminal. You can obviously see the crab symbol. I gave it an NS touch by adding the NS-type oranges and yellows, and by making a slight cell overlay to the entire thing. Everything is very subliminal - could you please give me some input or is that against the rules

For instance: Legionnaired: I have no clue in hell how you did the sig in the post before mine. I have absolutely no idea.

For the sig I made, I just layered cool-looking images on top of each other and fooled with the opaqueness of each layer until I found a suitable balance

He just beveled/embossed a layer with some stuff on it to get the "pop up" effect. That on top of one of his customary backrgrounds with the name and crab symbol. Pretty simple stuff, but its amazing what can be made in Photoshop.

About the crab symbol tho, I think it looks better if the crab itself is black, rather than the outline, against a light background like that.

Dub, where did you get the "cell" effect layer thing?
